Province of Pennsylvania. March 10, 1769. One Shilling. ''Bettering House Money''. Plate B. No.12326. Signed by J.[acob] Lewis, Cha.[rles] Thomson, and Sam.[uel] Rhoads [Jr.]. Printed on thinner coarse stock. Standard large vertical format Pennsylvania size, approximately 75mm by 90mm. Uniface, typeset face with border cuts and Penn Arms at lower right side. There were 30,000 notes authorized using four plate positions (A, B, C, and D).
A scarce series with high grade notes being great rarities, especially the lowest denominations. In the 4th edition of Newman, the series is not priced above Very Fine. Strict Very Fine notes are rare. In this historic sale we offer a stunning grade group of four ''Bettering House Notes'' that are true miracles of survival, essentially as issued and together as a set for perhaps 100 years or more.
This is the first of the four likely condition census topping notes. We challenge other advanced collectors to open their cabinets and show us superior examples from this series that exceed the quality of these four notes. Bright, vivid and virtually immaculate. Crisp Uncirculated and with strong claims to Choice. An unbelievable note, deeply embossed.
The top back corners are tip mounted to a green card and the bottom right corner tip is mounted to another piece of green card. The center of the card was cut away to reveal the superbly clean back. Well margined except for a slight bowing in at the lower right. Two pin holes seen from the face where this was obviously a short stack of bills at one time, long ago. How these notes were saved, we will never know. Basically, for the type: unimprovable!
