State of North Carolina. 1778 (August 8, 1778 Act). Five Dollars. The Rising STATES. No.3922. Signed by Exum and Williams. Printed on thinner dark coarse paper. Typeset face with ornamental borders. Pattern back design with imprint 'Printed by JA. DAVIS, 1778'. The third motto type used on this denomination and certainly a classic political statement. This example printed on the much thinner, flexible paper. A ''soft'' paper example. Very Fine. Horizontal fold and other light folds, mostly near the corners. Lower left corner rounded and toning spot at the center face showing to the back. Close at the left, but full and wide sheet corner margins at the top and right. The technical grade does little justice to this superior looking note.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The four ''The Rising States'' notes in this sale are an interesting study in regards to the paper type varieties used. Within the thick paper stock, we observed two distinctly different thicknesses used. The Ford-Boyd Collection is one of the ultimate research sources for these nuances. Nuances, perhaps not appreciated today, but hopefully information that will help spur advanced students in the future.
