City and County of Albany. February 17, 1776. One Eighth of a Spanish Milled Dollar or One Shilling. No.3057[over '6']. Signed by Abrm. Cuyler[?, an unlisted signature] and Jn. Van Rensselaer [in red]. Printed on laid paper. Uniface, ornate border cuts and type set. Banner 'ALBANY COUNTY' in the top cut. Serial number block lower left with denomination in Gothic sideways in the right end cut. Gordon Harris H1; Rarity 7. If not Rarity 7, then certainly high Rarity 6.
A superior note. Fine, split in half and paper stripped from the back. Uniformly toned as the majority of known notes on the series are. It presents a clean face with only some moderate soiling. A few pinholes. We will continue to remind collectors that grading early American Colonial notes is not the same as the fold counting used for U.S. Federal issues. For the most part, another example might not be seen for years or decades, if at all. A fascinating rarity payable in Continental Currency.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The top signature is clearly not Jacob Cuyler or any of the listed signers on the series. The first name abbreviation appears to be clearly ''Abr'm'' for ''Abraham'', but the rest appears to be ''Cuyler'' and Jacob Cuyler is a note signer on this series. A relative is certainly a logical conclusion.
