Colony of New York. September 2, 1775. Five Dollars. No.1611. Signed by Evert Bancker and Rob't Ray [in red]. Printed on thick stock. Ornate border cuts, New York Arms right. Printed back, vignette of 13 Branched Lit Candelabrum, motto UNO EODEMQUE IGNI. Imprint 'Printed by John Holt, in the Year 1775'. This is another great allegorical theme on this series of printed back by Holt.
An exceptional example and quality not seen often on many Colonial notes except for a few dwindling ''hoard'' series (this once was a ''hoard'', but long dispersed in 1935 or so in Wayte Raymond's shop). Though some notes from this issue were saved, they are far from commonplace at the highest end of the condition spectrum.
Gem Crisp Uncirculated. Fully so and considered as such by Mr. Ford, or near enough for ''government work.'' The surfaces are immaculate with the printed portions perfectly placed on the paper with full and wide margins. Sharply printed with embossing that ''rolls like the sea'' across the paper surfaces. There are some petty dings on the corners from the storage in the ''Boyd Boards,'' but otherwise this is virtually a perfect example of the type and series. Throw out the catalogue value and any preconceptions of prior worth for this potentially condition census topping note.
This peach of a note is for the finest quality cabinet of New York Currency, Colonial era currency or all Numismatic Americana.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
