Colony of New Hampshire. January 26, 1776. Two Dollars. No.1357. Portsmouth Issue Printed by Daniel Fowle. Payable on January 26, 1784. Signed by Smith and White. Printed on thinner, coarse stock than previous note. 76mm by 91mm. Standard face and back designs.
On the face, the obligation texts within ornate pattern borders and interior frames. The face using various repeating ornaments and mixed flourishes as dividers. Serial number cartouche at the top center. Signature area at the lower right. Latin motto across the top and with interwoven English motto on the bottom (on the Three Dollar and higher notes). Several denomination counters in various locations to prevent denomination raising. The back with four by four ornamental block pattern with denomination above and imprint below, 'PORTSMOUTH,/Printed By Daniel Fowle,/1776.' Six lines of ornaments across note in various positions.
As we stated, this is a rare series on New Hampshire for any example. The Ford-Boyd collection with so many notes from a rare series should spur the opportunity to obtain notes of this rarity caliber. This second Two Dollars note has a different due date, 1784, and was also represented in Ford X (lot 4751, in superlative grade and perhaps the finest type note known on any denomination from the series). Very Good to Fine. Top edge strip mounted to a white card (not certain of the glue strength, depth or color). Honest wear on this paper type. Creased, multifolded with a split at the right center. The face is soiled with a few patchy stains. Overall, a useful type note from this rare series.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The paper stock difference is dramatic and this print run with the 1784 due date is worthy of study for use of this paper on other denominations.
