Maryland. April 10, 1774. One Third of a Dollar or One Shilling Six Pence Sterling. No.2824. Signed by W.[illiam] Eddis and J.[ohn] Clapham. Printed on sturdy stock. Size and style as previous issue dates. Imprint 'Printed by A.C. and F. Green'. This issue on thinner paper circulated widely and these small notes took it hard. This is a lower right corner sheet example with extremely wide margins at the bottom (a small hole near the corner) and wide at the right. About Uncirculated or close to it. The mica reflects and glitters in the light. Heavy handling seen from the back and lightly toned. Still, a very sharp note.
Students who understand the grade dynamics of the 1767, 1770 and 1774 Maryland notes realize this note is not seen everyday. Not many were saved in 1774 and the majority of high grade notes came through Raymond, Boyd and Chapman in an era when the slow train was taken to auction sales in Philadelphia and New York, not jetting coast to coast after the slow security line at LaGuardia Airport. An opportunity again!
The sheet mate to the Wayte Raymond $2/3 plate note on page 12 of the 1940 edition of his American paper catalogue. Obviously an ex Raymond or Boyd note (or both).
