Georgia. 1776. One Spanish Milled Dollar. No.2525. Orange seal. Justice. SUSTINE RECTUM. Border variety (f). Signed by Saltus, Andrew, Evans and O'Bryen. Printed on laid paper. Another seal type and denomination that is not especially rare in general. However, this note is wonderfully bright and vivid. A very strong Very Fine to Extremely Fine. The folds are very light and seen from the back only. Well margined on three sides, but the bottom is trimmed in slightly on the bottom center. The motto is a bit distorted on the seal, but the color is deep orange and the vignette details are strong. The supply of these lovely color seal notes is not limitless in this or any collection we know of in private hands. This was a premium example even in 1899 and 1923. In this day and age, with greater demand and sophistication, it represents a superb example and a great opportunity.
There are nine border varieties listed in Newman for the one dollar notes of orange and green color types. Inspection of the borders on this denomination sometimes makes you think there are 900 varieties. Plate wear and odd placement of border ornament type during duress at the printing shop would likely have created subvarieties. Because of this complexity, only the most resolute might attempt a complete border variety set of this denomination on this or both color seals. The challenge could be quite enjoyable for the right collectors.
