State of New Jersey. June 9, 1780. Five Dollars. No.6170. Contemporary Counterfeit. ''Signed'' by P.[hilemon] Dickinson and D.[avid] Brearley; ''countersigned'' on the back by Borden. Printed on thin paper, watermarked 'UNITED/STATES'. Standard size, designs and imprint as used on Maryland and other State issued ''Guaranteed'' notes. Red face stamped ''Int pd to/July 26, 1781''. There were 12,000 genuine notes printed of this denomination and the other seven denominations on the issue.
This is a Newman listed counterfeit note. It is printed on very white textured paper compared to the genuine paper. However, the watermark is well done. The back diagnostic is in the 'N' of 'ABSTINE' in the motto. It is deformed. On the face, the ornament count on the top is an even fourteen on each side of the bullet and not 15 left and thirteen right [have fun counting the ornaments, the third pass usually works!]. This note has those diagnostics as well as a generally ''flatter'' plate look. A sharp note. Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Light handling folds. Bright with close margins at the left and bottom. Two hinges at the top back.
