State of Rhode Island &c. May 1786 Session. Forty Shillings. No.1. Signed by Samuel Allen, Jon.[athan] Hazard and Elijah Cobb. Printed on laid paper, visible watermark at lower left. 73mm by 108mm. Printed on both sides, standard Rhode Island style. Within three border cuts are typeset texts, Rhode Island seal with farm implements at left, signatures at bottom. Ornamental pattern back from edge to edge, 'Two/Pounds' at center. Imprint 'Printed by/SOUTHWICK and/BARBER.'
A common type on Colonial paper currency, but a superior example as this is the number one note of the type and very unusual. The Ford-Boyd Collection has a few number one notes (see Maryland, lot 8150 in this sale) and it is interesting to note that these were plucked by avid collectors a century ago and saved. Extremely Fine Plus. Bent corner tips and lightly toned.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The three highest denominations on the Act required three signatures.
