Province of Pennsylvania. March 10, 1769. Two Shillings. ''Bettering House Money.'' Plate C. No.12654. Signed by J.[acob] Lewis, Cha.[rles] Thomson, and Sam.[uel] Rhoads [Jr.]. Printed on thinner coarse stock. Standard large vertical format Pennsylvania size, approximately 75mm by 90mm. Uniface, typeset face with border cuts and Penn Arms at upper right side. There were 20,000 notes authorized of this denomination and it used four plate positions as well. A scarce series with high grade notes being great rarities.
The fourth and final note from this incredible group of ''Bettering House Money.'' This is another awesome note, not exactly falling in the serial number range seen above, but in the 12,000 number range. Again, top of the condition census or virtually so. We have never seen notes from this issue that hold a candle to these. The majority seen are Good to Very Good, ragged and soiled. These are basically ''Mint State'' and the equivalent event to discovering brand new 1794 Large Cents in blasting mint red that were unknown and never before seen at auction. Only future generations of further advanced numismatists will truly understand the epic scale of this superb group of 1769 ''Bettering House'' notes.
Bright, fresh and vivid from the face with natural paper ripples seen from the face as made (during the note drying process). Crisp Uncirculated and close to Choice. The top back corners are tip mounted to a thin green card and pedigrees to the same old collection as the other previous notes. Well centered mostly, but close at the upper right. There are some very petty dings on two corners. Virtually a pristine example of note type. Repetitively stunning, if there is such a situation!
