 State of North Carolina. May 10, 1780 Act. Four Hundred Dollars. Mutare vel timere Sperno. No.301. Signed by H. Vipon and Cooke. Printed on thick paper. Typeset face with ornamental borders. Simple pattern back (new style, not matching any 1778 back), similar to 1778 notes, with imprint 'Printed by JAMES DAVIS, 1780'. The only $400 note on the series and State with an undisclosed print run. The printing likely to be 1,000 notes of both paper type and perhaps less. This superb note is the sheet mate to the above $300 thick white paper note above (lot 8520) and is a miracle of survival.
A stunning example for any type note on this Act and it is a $400 note as well! Choice Crisp Uncirculated. Immaculate from the face, bright and clean with wide sheet margins at the top and left. Deeply embossed from the back to the face. Very faint printing weakness seen on the perimeter as made. Like the above $300 sheet mate to this, there are four back corner mounting remnants, mostly away from the deeply inked printed back portions. Raymond pencil code at the upper right. A wonder note that will be memorable to North Carolina Colonial specialists for years or decades to come.
