 State of North Carolina. May 10, 1780 Act. Three Hundred Dollars. Aut nunquam tentes aut perfice. No.301. Signed by H. Vipon and Cooke. Printed on thick paper. Typeset face with ornamental borders. Simple pattern back (a new back design), similar to 1778 notes, with imprint 'Printed by JAMES DAVIS, 1780'. The only $300 motto type on the series and the only $300 denomination on the State. There is no print figure listed, but certainly in the 1,000 note range and listed in the Affleck-Ball Sale as ''Rare''. We would have to concur with that viewpoint. This note is from a small group of high end thick paper notes on the highest denominations on the Act in this sale.
Crisp Uncirculated and nearly Choice. There is only some minor corner handling. Bold, crisp paper and superb centering. The note is superb from the face. However, there are four back corner mounting remnants, mostly away from the deeply inked printed back portions. Raymond pencil code at the upper right. Likely, the finest known or near it.

Like the $200 note, this is a new style back not used on the 1778 series. The motto translates as ''Either finish or never begin'' which has always been the numismatic auction cataloguer's lament.
