State of the Massachusetts Bay. September 17, 1776. Fourteen Shillings. No.92. Signed by C. Davis [?, faint] and J.[ohn] Murray. Revere Sword in Hand Note. Printed on rigid, thick stock. 75mm by 98mm. A rarer series of Swords with only eight denominations printed from a solitary set of plates. The plate re-engraving work became very apparent on this issue and the diagnostics of genuine notes have the ''blurry'' look of some of the earlier series counterfeits. On this issue, Newman lists only the Thirty Six Shillings as having a known counterfeit. Denominations such as this seemed to be immune from the counterfeiter's wrath as they focused on the higher denomination bills.
The denomination represented in the Ford X Sale (lot 4688) and the last of three genuine notes from this rare Act date from the Ford-Boyd collection. Genuine and a fairly sharp plate state with well defined features. From the face, the look of a superior example. Nominally About Extremely Fine or so. Sadly, a severe impairment on the back with a large white paper remnant at the top adhering to heavy ''horse glue.'' However, A very crisp note. Uniform toning with some mottling on both sides and light soiling. If not for the severe back mounting, this would be high condition census due to the strong paper quality and only a light fold. Difficult to evaluate, but if you need a note from this Act date, an opportunity knocks.
