1850 AU-58 (NGC). A splendid example, this piece is quite beautiful in its appearance—sharply struck, with bright yellow gold surfaces and with eye appeal. The piece has seen some limited circulation, as reflected by the grading number, but is far choicer than normally seen with this numerical assignment. If you are seeking a piece for a type set, investigate this carefully. The S.S. Republic was lost at sea in October 1865. In 2003 and 2004 Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc., recovered much treasure from the wreck, a wide scattering of date and mint varieties of gold and silver coins, with emphasis on the latter.
From the S.S. Republic.
NGC Census: 17; 3 finer within the designation, S.S. Republic only (MS-61 finest).
