1840-D AU-50 (NGC). Warm honey gold with delightful underlying lustre and a hint of faint orange toning. One of the most popular rarities from the early days of the Dahlonega Mint, a date that saw a production of just 3,523 pieces. When found, grades of VF (or less) are the typical offerings in the numismatic marketplace. Struck from dramatically shattered dies, as seen routinely for this issue; just one pair of dies is known to have been used to strike this issue. Rarer than typically thought, and here, nicer than typically offered. Don't miss this opportunity.
NGC Census: 7; 11 finer (MS-62 finest). Bisecting obverse crack from rim at 10:00, diagonally across Liberty's portrait, and to the rim at 5:00. Reverse more heavily shattered, heavy die cracks from the dentils extend from 12:00, 3:00, 4:00, 6:00, and 7:00, all converging toward the center. The die state here is equal to that seen for Bass:329 (October 1999).
