1829 B-1. Rarity-4. MS-63 (NGC). Bright yellow gold, a remarkably light and even shade, with highly reflective surfaces on the obverse and strong cartwheel lustre on the reverse. The reflective nature of the obverse magnifies some very minor marks, mostly concentrated in front of Liberty's profile. Good detail on both sides, a bit soft in the shield as usually seen, old diagonal scrape through top of shield stripes. Any survivor of this type exists by fortunate happenstance; mintages were uniformly tiny and shortly after mintage these were worth more in a melt barrel than in commerce. This particular date finds its way into more type sets than any other, and we imagine that this coin will also find a happy home as a highlight rarity in a gold type set.
NGC Census: 6; 6 finer (MS-65 finest).
