1787 New Jersey copper. M-6.D. Rarity-2. EF-40. 146.6 grains. Glossy medium brown with smooth and attractive surfaces. Scattered tiny marks, mostly at centers, pre-existed striking and were not completely obliterated in the coining chamber, though a small batch of marks above the star after E in the reverse motto are minor post-striking contact points. Some darker toning is present beneath the plow hands, a few scattered spots but no significant corrosion, excellent overall eye appeal and nice quality rims. Far finer than usually seen, decently struck and well-detailed despite an advanced die state. Parallel die flaws or spalling are present across the plow handles, and a diagonal crack and small cud are present beneath the shield. This was the only 6-D in the Boyd-Ford collection, and its quality is fine enough to represent this die pair in any world-class cabinet of New Jersey coppers.
From the F.C.C. Boyd Collection; Stack's sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part I, October 2003, Lot 75. The original Ford lot ticket is included with this lot.
