1788 Massachusetts cent. R-10.L. Rarity-2. EF-45, but granular. A very sharp specimen of the type. Fairly even deep steel brown, finely granular on the obverse and somewhat more granular on the reverse, particularly at the peripheries. A rim bruise is noted over SA of MASSACHUSETTS, some other more minor rim flaws and tiny surface scrapes, reasonably attractive overall. The detail in the Indian's face and hair is far sharper than usually seen, and modern collectors will undoubtedly find space in their collection for this example just like Ryder and Boyd did.
From Hillyer Ryder to F.C.C. Boyd; Stacks' sale of the John J. Ford Jr., Collection Part 5, October 2004, Lot 146 (there misattributed as Ryder 12-K). The original Ford lot ticket is included.
