A pleasing circulated specimen of a great American rarity, a one year type with a mintage of just 2,710 pieces. Even, medium yellow gold with some remaining lustre. Good eye appeal, only light wear with all major details bold and clear, some light hairlines and various abrasions. Thin scratches from star 1 to Liberty's throat and star 5 to Liberty's nose are noted, a trace of reverse granularity turns up under a glass. A short diagonal batch of adjustment marks may be seen within the top portion of the shield. With specimens of this rarity regularly bringing strong six-figure prices at auction as more collectors include gold types in their sets, additional pressure is placed on the already-challenging circulated specimens of this rarity. This piece offers good sharpness and desirable eye appeal without approaching the six-figure barrier.

From Stack's 2005 Americana sale, January 2005, Lot 3144.
