Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Act of July 25, 1780. 'One Thousand Pounds of Nett Inspected Tobacco'. No.1218. ''July 25'' '1780'. Signed by Geo.[rge] Brooke. 141mm by 81mm. Uniface, printed on tissue thin laid paper. Within an ornamental border of crowns (unusual use, but probably expedient) and ornaments is detailed enactment text in nine lines. The form issued by the Commonwealth ''For speedily recruiting the quota of this state for the continental army.'' and payable as a loan 'one thousand pounds nett inspected tobacco,...' The certificates were assignable and payable to 'heirs, executors...' Dated, numbered, signed, but not issued.
Listed in Newman, page 449. Anderson VA-5 Rarity 8. The Newman Plate Note, so illustrated on page 449 of the fourth edition. Courtesy of Eric Newman, this is also The Plate Note in Anderson on page 168. An extremely rare form and superb grade. The tissue thin paper type would make survivors a rare breed. These were likely redeemed or few were issued. Tobacco based currency was common in Virginia and the populace was used to it.
Very Fine to Extremely Fine for the note. Multiple folds, but the face appeal is stunning. Natural tone to the paper. The speck of white on the Newman Plate note is not a hole and is not there. There is some minor ink corrosion from acid in the inks, but this is minor. Bold and attractive. A key piece of Continental Army related militaria on Virginia. Superb grade adds to the allure.
