'Government of the Territory of Orleans,...' August 24, 1804. Printed on laid paper. Partly printed form. 257mm by 218mm. Sheriff's 'judgment' form for the ''first Superior Court [written]''. The judgment form for payment of $2,642.30 which can be recovered from any property from the 'personal estate exclusive of slaves....' Embossed seal. A fascinating slavery related and very early Southern form. Nearly all typeset and fully accomplished in dark brown ink. Multiple endorsements on the verso with judgment, plus interest. At the bottom, an 1808 transaction for a ''negro boy''. Folding as seen on such documents. Very Fine.
Ex Anderson Sale (NASCA-Karp Auction, March 28-30, 1985, lot 2779).
Note that tangible property was to be seized first, prior to any slaves. This would allow the debtor the ability to sustain a living. As a last resort, the slave property would be seized.
