George III, 1760-1820. Pattern Obverse, n.d. (ca. 1768). Silver uniface, 23.5mm, 6.25 grams. Choice About Uncirculated. Distinctive laureate head r., full British titles GEORGIVS III D.G.M . B. F. ET H. REX F.D. Plain edge, blank reverse shows some hairlining. This enigmatic piece resembles the Gold Guinea and Silver Shilling in size, but the Hanover 1768 Gold 5 Taler of the Clausthal Mint (KM 361) shows an identical head and the same full titles. No example bearing this distinctive head appeared in the Douglas-Morris or Murdoch Collections. Use of the full, pre-1802 titles would have been unusual for a British coin as these divided the royal name and titles between obverse and reverse. George III Hanoverian portrait coins presented the titles exactly as the present fascinating Pattern. Here is a tantalizing Pattern worthy of in-depth research. (Est. $1,000-$1,250)
