This piece was rather crudely holed many, many years ago as the color is entirely honest and original. Muted mint frost is quite evident in the protected areas of the legends and design features.

It is generally believed that this die variety of 1801 is the only variety of this date that may actually have been struck in 1801 (i.e. the other three known 1801 circulation varieties were all minted in 1802 or later, and the Proofs were minted no earlier than the 1830's).
