SOUTH CAROLINA. CHARLESTON. Rulau SC9. W.W. Wilbur, Auction & Commission Merchant, 1846. Brass, 29mm. About Fine. in 14-1/2 x 13-1/4 inch mahogany-grain wooden frame with glass on both sides, virtually new. This Charleston Token presents the figure of an auctioneer with hammer raised, palmetto tree on reverse. This important obverse variety shows CHARLESTON SO CA, GOING AT ONLY A PENNY below the auctioneer. Deep green matte shows an inner gold frame around the plastic capsule that protects the token. Below this is a cut out 92 x 50mm space holding a period advertisement headed AUCTION SALES, Single Negro of Warranted Character/ BY WILBUR & SON... HARRY, 32 years old, sound and of good character, has been accustomed to work about a store, and useful at any kind of work; sold for no fault... Frame bears an affixed Antiquities Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Antiques Historical Galleries, an amazing display item.
