Caligula, 37-41 A.D. Denarius, 37 A.D. Bare Caligula head r. Rv. Radiate head r. of Divus Augustus between two stars; anepigraphic. RIC 2 (R), BMC 4. On this magnificent example of Roman coin portraiture, Caligula is shown slightly aged, while Augustus is depicted somewhat stern and energetic. Pleasing surfaces toned an even pale gray.
