Julian CM-23. Japanese Embassy Medal, 1860. Copper bronzed, 76mm. By Anthony C. Paquet. Choice About Uncirculated. Obv. President James Buchanan bust r. Rev. 8-line inscription hailing first embassy from Japan, opened to the West by Commodore Matthew C. Perry four years earlier. This obverse was later used for the Dr. Frederick Rose medal. Deep mahogany with a couple of tiny rim nicks.
