BANSWARA. Lakshman Singh, 1844-1905. 'Nazarana' Rupees, n.d. (ca. 1870). 'Samsatraba' both sides. KM 23. Many with light reddish stain (easily removable) as often is the case. Extremely Fine. 25 pieces. SOLD AS IS. NO RETURNS. (Est. $225-$275)

In defiance of a British order prohibiting the issuance of coinage, the Banswara Maharawal Lakshman Singh had a series of coins in Copper, Silver and Gold struck for his state in 1870. These crude coins are all inscribed in a secret script invented by the Maharawal, and bear the enigmatic phrase Samsatraba, which may allude to the Hindu deity Shiva.
