Smithfield Club Prize Medal Uniface Obverse, 1845. Silver, 48.5mm. By William Wyon. BHM 2218. Very Fine. Bust of Earl Spencer as used on finished medals; JOHN CHARLES EARL SPENCER PRESIDENT, below: 1825-1845. Rev. Blank but for criss-cross of file lines. Nick on Spencer's chin. (Est. $90-$120)

John Charles Spencer (1782-1845) was the third Earl Spencer. Established in 1798, the Smithfield Club was devoted to the improvements in the breeding of cattle. During his Presidency, Spencer used his sound business knowledge to improve the Club's stability. This medal was used as a prize medal for the Club, with the winner's name engraved on the edge. A similar medal is described in BHM with the reverse as having the bare head of the Duke of Richmond.
