BRITISH NORTH BORNEO COMPANY. Arms of the British North Borneo Co., lion passant over sailing dhow, appear countermarked on the reverse of a Guatemala Fernando VII 8 Reales, 1815 NG M (Host KM 69). Host's obverse also bears an unintelligible round countermark of unknown origin on the King's neck. This anomalous piece shows the Arms reversed, arguing use of a printing die. Official countermarks for this Chartered Company or the later Crown Colony are unknown, suggesting a later fabrication. Pridmore, KM unlisted. Fine. (Est. $200-$250)
The British North Borneo Co. led by Sir Alfred Dent and Austrian Baron Gustavus von Overbeck, received a Royal Charter in 1881. Its decimal coinage began in 1882 and continued under the Crown Colony until 1941.
