BRITISH NORTH BORNEO COMPANY. Arms of the British North Borneo Co., lion passant over sailing dhow,...BRITISH NORTH BORNEO COMPANY. Arms of the British North Borneo Co., lion passant over sailing dhow, appear countermarked on the reverse of a Guatemala Fernando VII 8 Reales, 1815 NG M (Host KM 69). Host's obverse also bears an unintelligible round countermark of unknown origin on the King's neck. This anomalous piece shows the Arms reversed, arguing use of a printing die. Official countermarks for this Chartered Company or the later Crown Colony are unknown, suggesting a later fabrication. Pridmore, KM unlisted. Fine. (Est. $200-$250)

The British North Borneo Co. led by Sir Alfred Dent and Austrian Baron Gustavus von Overbeck, received a Royal Charter in 1881. Its decimal coinage began in 1882 and continued under the Crown Colony until 1941.
