Baker 69A. Repub. Ameri. Penny or Medal, Second Obverse, 1799. White Metal, 33mm, 2.4mm thick. Plain edge. (Dalton & Hamer 245 bis.). Choice About Uncirculated. Substantial lustre, an insignificant mark or two from full Mint State. Obv. Civil bust r. over Old Style birth date Feb. 11, and an unusual death date of Dec. 21 (most sources cite Dec. 14) forming a tiny arc. Rev. Fasces, caduceus and cannon with scroll inscribed REPUB. AMERI. within three concentric legends sketching Washington's career. The Copper bronzed pieces of 1796 are believed by some numismatists to have been Pennies which circulated in the flood tide of English Tradesmen's (''Conder'') Tokens in the 1790's. At some point, Washington's death date was added to the die beneath the bust to create a different type. The Copper examples are elusive while the White Metal strikes are significant rarities.
