Brevet Colonel James Duncan Medal, 1849. Copper bronzed, 53.6mm. By C.C. Wright & Salathiel Ellis. About Uncirculated. Obv. Undraped bust r., concentric legends present Duncan's name and battle honors. A vertical crack bisects the obverse. Rev. 7-line tribute of New York citizens to Duncan, an 1831 West Point graduate breveted major for gallantry at Palo Alto on May 8, 1846, lieutenant colonel for gallantry at Resaca de la Palma the next day, and colonel for gallantry at Monterey on September 23, 1846. He died on July 3, 1849 from the cumulative effects of this protracted combat.
