Deified head of Alexander the Great r. wearing horn of Ammon. Rv. Athena seated l. holding Nike. 16.93 grams. Cf. Arnold-Biucchi 15 (obverse die 4). Small scrape on bottom edge of reverse. Exceptionally fine style. Extremely Fine. (Est. $2,500-$3,500)

Pergamum is recognized as the mint that produced the finest portraits of Alexander the Great. Perhaps five of the fourteen obverses known to Arnold-Biucchi (in Studies Price) represent the best work. This coin is from one of those obverse dies and is certainly one of the finest of all Hellenistic coin portraits.
