GELA. Ca. 450-440 B.C. Tetradrachm. Quadriga r. with Nike above crowning horses; flanking tendrils of palmette in ex. Rv. Forepart of man-headed bull r.; CEΛAΣ above. 16.88 grams. Jenkins 351 (this coin). Struck on a broad flan, darkly toned, showing the full dimensions of the complex obverse design. Struck from a worn obverse die, not atypical for this issue, which has produced a loss of detail quite apart from the issue of wear. In fact, Very Fine in point of wear as evidenced by the high points on both sides. A rare variety. (Est. $2,500-$3,500)
Ex Lockett Collection.
