Good Samaritan ''Sixpence. '' Muling of Wyatt Good Samaritan Shilling obverse and Wyatt Pine Tree Sixpence Obverse. Silver. About As Struck. This is probably among the restrikes from Wyatt's dies made by Edwin Bishop of New York, as other such mulings are known, such as the Good Samaritan/Oak Tree Shilling. It is not known how many of each muling were made by Bishop, but they are undoubtedly very rare. The silver-gray surfaces are gently lustrous and glossy and show just light handling. The peripheries of the Pine Tree side are a bit uneven due to the smallness of the sixpence die in relation to the larger Good Samaritan die used on the other side. Eric Newman's 1959 The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling is a highly recommended read for those who have not encountered this well-researched monograph. In it, Newman goes through the origins of the ''original'' Good Samaritan piece and the eventual 19th century copies, such as the piece offered in this lot.
