Seal of the Confederate States of America, 1862. Bronze cast uniface, 89.1mm. Uncirculated. Central circle holds Washington on horseback in wreath of tobacco, cotton, wheat, corn, motto DEO VINDICE, To God the Avenger. Solid cast with a bold sonorous ring, unlike the electrotype shells sold later by the Wyon engravers. The Seal was ordered in England by the Confederacy, but delivery was impeded by the blockade. Deep glossy brown, file marks appear on back and edge.
