PE-37. Daniel Webster Medal, 1852. Gutta Percha (possibly Hard Rubber), 76.1mm, 7.3mm thick. By Charles Cushing Wright, published by F.W. Green. About Uncirculated. Obv. Aged head r. Rev. Globe on pillar, I YET LIVE, federal buildings on horizon. Faint concentric lines in the fields, tiny chip behind head, one reverse edge chip noted for accuracy. Glossy, dark brown suggesting the Hard Rubber used for some 19th century tokens, a fascinating non-metallic material unlisted by Julian. Interestingly, one of Webster's last legal cases was the Goodyear Rubber patent infringement litigation. Stack's featured a Leather example of the U.S. Grant Vicksburg medallion in our recent Americana sale, and a cataloguer can only wish that more research was devoted to these rare non-metallic issues.
