Uniformed British officer clasps hand with Indian Chief, a tomahawk discarded on the ground between them, tepees in background. Incuse legend INDIAN TREATY No., 187-. These figures traditionally were identified as Canadian Treaty Commissioner Colonel McLeod and Chief Roundmaker. Neither date nor Treaty number were impressed on this example, which may be in the nature of a Bronze trial strike, as the medals presented to Indian leaders were Silver.
Plain edge shows incuse number '6' at 2:00. This errant number may refer to Treaty No. 6, signed on August 13 and 28 and on September 9, 1876 by the Plain and Wood Cree Indians, later by the Blackfoot, Stony Plain, Little Pines and Big Bear Tribes. Among recipients of the Treaty No. 6 Medal was Chief Big Bear, later associated with Metis rebel leader Louis Riel in the North West Rebellion of 1885, who was captured on July 2, 1885.
