Baker 78, Betts 544. Voltaire Washington Medal, ca. 1778. Bronze, 40.2mm, 343.2 grains. Plain Edge. No undertype. Extremely Fine. Obv. Imaginary bust of Washington facing right. Rev. Trophy of arms including a cannon and mortar, the inscription around in tiny letters says that Washington combined the qualities of both a philosopher and a warrior. A spot in the right obverse field; rim problems at left likely from the rim break usually seen there. Traces of some inactive verdigris on the obverse. The Voltaire medal is usually considered the earliest struck honoring Washington, commissioned by the great philosopher Voltaire.
