1798 JR-4 (R-3). 13 Stars. Large '8'. Choice About Uncirculated. Obverse type: Liberty's draped bust facing right. LIBERTY above, 1798 below. Large '8' in date. 13 stars around. Reverse type: Heraldic eagle derived from the Great Seal of the United States of America. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. 13 stars above eagle's head. A lovely example of this broken obverse die variety. Both sides are light silver gray with attractive pale gold iridescent toning showing. The obverse die break from the rim at upper right through 'Y' of LIBERTY down to Liberty's nose is quite bold and visible without the aid of magnification. The reverse die seen on this variety was first used to make the Breen 2 1798 Quarter Eagles. Then it was used to strike this Dime variety, after which it struck the 1800 JR-1 Dimes before being retired from service.
