Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 877 1840'C' EF to AU $2,800.00 Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. Boldly struck with a high outer rim that protected the bold devices during their brief circulating life. One of 12,833 struck and a finer piece than the James A. Stack example. A lovely coin for any high quality type or date collection. 878 1842'C' Large Date AU $3,750.00 About Uncirculated and virtually Choice. Well struck with resulting bold detail, light yellow-gold surfaces bear a few marks consistent with this high grade. Careful study reveals a hairline scratch from below the eye to the truncation. Simply stated, this is an attractive Branch Mint coin of a quality seldom encountered today. NGC AU53 Richmond. 879 1842'O' EF to AU $2,400.00 Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. Moderate circulation, careful examination reveals a couple of rim bruises but the overall visual appeal of this rare New Orleans date remains high. One of 16,400 struck and distinctly above average for this Branch Mint date. 880 1845 Repunched '8'. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $340.00 - from the standpoint of actual wear, but surfaces exhibit the distinctive appearance of Salt Water recovery pieces. This coin shows an exemplary strike with a pleasing subtle matte appearance which is often the result of long sea immersion. Here is a well struck survivor of this No Motto issue. 881 1845'D' CH AU $4,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Beautifully detailed reliefs reflect the splendid quality of this Branch Mint coin's strike. Although this Dahlonega date shows a reasonable reported mintage, higher grade examples are remarkably scarce. This coin reveals to the diligent searcher a few bagmarks and a rim ding at 3:00 but no visible demerits presenting serious problems. NGC AU55. 882 1845'O' CH AU $3,600.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Well struck with just minor abrasion in the fields. A pleasing No Motto example from the New Orleans Mint. Lustrous surfaces embrace lightly worn devices. Quite scarce in this grade with only 15 to 20 pieces known in AU. NGC AU55. 883 1845'O' AU $2,850.00 About Uncirculated and on the cusp of Choice. Remarkably even yellow-gold covers both sides of this sharply detailed and generally satisfying coin. Such wear as is present is uniform and should present no special challenges to the most fastidious collector. NGC AU53. 884 1847/7 CH AU $1,600.00 Choice About Uncirculated, nearly full Mint State. Here is an especially vivid example of this sought-after variety, showing the top of another '7' clearly among the denticles below the date. Considerable reflective lustre and a whisper of red-gold give this handsome coin its undeniable charm. PCGS AU55. 885 1847'D' CH AU $5,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A coin on the cusp of a Mint State designation. A wisp of friction is relegated to the top of Liberty's hair. Less than about 50 pieces known in this exalted grade and quite rare as such. NGC AU58. 886 1847'O' CH AU $8,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. All lettering, stars and date are quite sharp. The mint mark is also very distinct. Limited friction is coupled with pleasing surfaces, making this coin worthy of a strong bid. This coin is the rarest New Orleans mint Half Eagle according to Doug Winter with only a handful in this marvelous condition. NGC AU55. 887 1852'C' AU $3,100.00 About Uncirculated. Hints of original mint lustre are visible among the devices. Well struck bronze surfaces offer pleasing amounts of detail. A scarce coin in high grade with about 35 pieces known in this grade. NGC AU55. 888 1854'D' Open 5, Large D. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $7,000.00 Honey gold surfaces maintain a good deal of mint lustre. Planchet laminations at the obverse, particularly before Liberty's nose, add character to this interesting coin. The strike is quite ample, giving this Dahlonega issue strong details. A variety that is very rare in grades above About Uncirculated. 889 1855'C' CH AU $3,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A well struck example with bold detail. Much lustre still remains with both sides being somewhat reflective. Attractive greenish-gold toning gives this coin excellent eye appeal. A wonderful example of this rare and popular coin struck from this famous Southern Mint. 890 1856'C' AU $2,800.00 About Uncirculated. A better than average strike along with pale yellow-gold toning define this desirable coin. There is some light abrasion but nothing too serious to detrace from this scarce coin with a mintage of only 28,457 pieces. NGC AU50. 891 1858'C' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $10,000.00 This wonderfully rich yellow-golden specimen features assertive definition and an abundance of luxurious icy mint frost. Trivial hairlines are detectable under close scrutiny in the upper right reverse field, otherwise this very rare example is free of any noteworthy encumbrances. As is the case with all Charlotte Mint gold issues, the Half Eagles of this date are always the object of...  more 892 1864 AU $2,500.00 About Uncirculated. A very rare Civil War issue with a total mintage of a mere 4,170 pieces. An overall attractive coin adorned with coppery gold lustre. Some softness is apparent on stars ten through twelve. NGC AU50. 893 1877'CC' AU $6,500.00 About Uncirculated. A most pleasing example of this scarce issue in high grade. Abundant mint lustre still permeates the prominently struck stars, central device and date. A very rare date with only 8,680 struck and far less known to have survived, expecially as ;nice as this example. NGC AU50. 894 1880 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $190.00 Here is a coin of the most dazzling light yellow lustre, giving it virtually prooflike beauty and appeal. 895 1880, 1886'S', 1893 AU $400.00 About Uncirculated. Coins display lightest wear, the last date was dipped at some time. 3 pieces. 896 1880'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $220.00 Frosty lustre bathes both the smooth fields and crisply defined reliefs. 897 1881 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,050.00 Satiny yellow-gold lustre saturates this delightfully glowing example of a date increasingly elusive in the higher grade levels. 898 1881 First 8 Repunched. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $410.00 - and bordering on the Choice category. Light greenish-golden toning over decent surfaces. The first '8' in the date has the remnants of another '8' under it. An unusual error for the specialist. 899 1881 First 8 Repunched. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $160.00 - and nearly Choice. This attractive example retains a wealth of mint frost. The remnants of the top of an '8' can be found within the upper loop of the first '8'. 900 1881, 1882, 1882'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 All show abundant lustre, especially vivid around each coin's sharply defined reliefs. 3 pieces. 901 1881 Brilliant Uncirculated; 1884'S' BU $400.00 Extremely Fine; 1903'S' About Uncirculated. Here are colorful, bagmarked examples of these important dates. 3 pieces. 902 1881, 1886'S', 1904 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $380.00 Pleasant lustrous strikes, the first and last were wiped or dipped. 3 pieces. 903 1881 CH AU $160.00 Choice About Uncirculated, nearly in the Mint State category. Lustre is virtually full, a wisp of circulation appears in the smooth fields. NGC AU58. 904 1881'S' Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,600.00 Well struck with orange-gold toning. The surfaces are well above average for the grade, making this coin quite attractive. 905 1882 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $300.00 Deep orange-gold lustre gives remarkable richness to a bold strike. PCI MS63. 906 1884'CC' AU $2,900.00 About Uncirculated or virtually so. Actual wear is minimal, and surfaces show considerable lustre, especially around the reliefs.
