The obverse stars are arranged 10x5, the 5 in the date touches the bust heavily, and a bold, raised dot-dash can be seen near repunched left top of the 'Y' in LIBERTY. The obverse field bears a few hairlines, while the reverse displays distinctly prooflike flash with most of the eagle's breast feathers clearly defined. A small circular dig can be sought out...  more 2231 1795 Tar.1, Br.1-A. Thirteen Leaf Reverse AU $35,000.00 About Uncirculated. Obverse stars arranged 10x5, the 5 in the date touches bust heavily. LIBERTY shows its 'Y' repunched at left top with a raised dash above it. Boldly struck and showing only the lightest wear with a few scattered obverse tics including a mark on the cap. CH AU $14,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. This obverse displays the New stars placed far from curl but close to the back of Liberty's Cap. Boldly struck with only a whisper of wear to be sought out on the deep yellow-gold surfaces. The obverse field bears a scattering of bag marks, none of serious visual importance. The reverse field shows profound flash, and under magnification reveals a shallow rim...  more 2234 1801 Tar.25, Br.2-B. CH AU $6,750.00 Choice About Uncirculated. This coin displays the new type obverse stars with one distant from the lowest curl, another close to the back of Liberty's Cap. Fully struck with bold ''spikes'' in the cap. Close study reveals polishing and some field tooling that give the superficial appearance of an ''arm's length Gem.'' Here is an affordable example of this classic early Gold coinage. 2235 1801 Tar.25, Br.2-B. CH AU $9,250.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Mostly yellow-green toning with some coppery toning hidden in the devices. Well struck with the reverse exhibiting prooflike fields. The lustre is still quite strong as it flows off the fields. A few very minuscule rim nicks are this coin's major detractions. A very attractive example of one of this country's early gold type coins. 2236 1803 Tar.30, Br.1-E. Large Stars, Tiny Star on Cloud CH AU $9,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated and not far from Mint State. Extremely light wear can be found though the smooth fields retain a powerful reflectivity. Examination reveals a few light hairlines and a couple of tiny marks on either side. This reverse is remarkable for the star that boldly overlaps the right-most cloud and for another tiny star placed at that same cloud's center. Liberty Head Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2237 1842'O' EF $1,700.00 Extremely Fine, perhaps better in terms of wear but the coin has been gently polished and now has a medium green patina. The strike is strong for this issue and the surfaces are a bit pebbly. A low mintage date with only 27,400 pieces struck. 2238 1846'O' AU $4,200.00 About Uncirculated and displaying mint frost beneath deep yellow-golden toning. Light repunching is evident above the top curve of the mintmark. There is a single small obverse copper stain near the top of Liberty's head, otherwise the coloration is very well balanced. This date is quite scarce in any condition, and can certainly be considered rare at or above the grade level offered...  more 2239 1848 CH AU $1,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated, close to Mint State with considerable mint lustre coalescing around the reliefs. All devices are crisp, those on the reverse slightly more so. Here is a very satisfying example of the early Liberty coinage, struck just before the roaring onset of the California Gold Rush. 2240 1853'O' CH AU $6,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, a whisper from full Mint State. Substantial lustre joins with a forceful strike to give this example of an elusive New Orleans date its assertive beauty. NGC certified only 207 examples in all conditions, just 44 in the present coin's grade with exactly four representing all higher grades. NGC AU58. 2241 1855 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $9,000.00 - and approaching the Choice category. Smooth fields and precisely detailed devices are laved in a wealth of red-gold lustre. Careful search will turn up a very few bag marks which offer no distraction from the splendid overall visual quality of this marvelously struck example. 2242 1856 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,250.00 Rich honey gold color is contrasted by paler hues in the fields and other protected areas. A well struck example with lightly frosted devices. PCGS MS61. 2243 1856 CH AU $1,050.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Well struck with tempered lustre due to a past light dipping. Very well struck and boasting a very appealing look with no major marks. 2244 1868 CH AU $13,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated and on the cusp of Mint State. Gorgeous prooflike glitter covers both sides of this sharply struck example of just 10,360 circulation strikes produced in this post-Civil War date. Such wear as may be present is exceedingly mild and the most diligent search turns up a very minor mark or two of minimal visual importance. Some moderate field abrasion over well struck surfaces is joined by some light reflectivity under medium toning. A very scarce date with only 17,300 pieces struck. 2246 1877'CC' AU $8,000.00 Extremely Fine. Remarkably smooth fields highlight the boldly struck and fully detailed devices on this example of only 3,332 Eagles struck at Carson City. This is a remarkably high grade for a Branch Mint coin essentially non-collectible in Mint State and rare in About Uncirculated. This coin compares favorably with the James A. Satiny lustre cascades over this pleasing beauty. 2249 1882 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $280.00 - and offering some characteristics indicative of a Choice coin. Frosty and well struck with a bit of light abrasion visible. 2250 1883 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $15,500.00 Lightly frosted, sharply detailed and defined reliefs are suspended over mirror-flashing fields of almost startling intensity. A perfectionist can find a couple of trivial tics under magnification but the coin's overall beauty is overwhelming. One of only 40 Proofs struck, and one of exactly six examples appearing in the 10-year auction record compiled by Dannreuther and Garrett. A bold strike adds to the wonderful allure. A vibrant honey gold coin that is sure to please the most fastidious of collectors.NGC MS64. 2254 1892 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $20,000.00 - or even finer. Fantastic mirror gleam in the glass-smooth fields complements the perfect light frosting of the devices and reliefs, all laved in a most delicate flush of clear rose-gold. A hairline or two can be found with effort. This is the rarest Gold denomination of this historic date with only 72 pieces struck, just enough for the Gold Proof sets offered by the Mint to the few collectors...  more 2255 1893 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $300.00 - and close to Choice. Moderately bagmarked, mostly on the obverse. 2257 1897 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $325.00 This attractive coin is virtually mark free but may have been lightly dipped long ago. 2258 1897 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $275.00 Here is a honey gold example that displays a good deal of satiny mint sheen. 2259 1899 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $650.00 Delicate greenish-gold toning over well represented mint frost.
