Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1576 1859 AU $6,500.00 About Uncirculated. Traces of mint frost are quite visible on this, rich orange-gold toned early Philly mint Double Eagle. A crisply detailed example with minimum friction, a survivor of just 43,597 specimens struck of this date. 1577 1860 CH AU $2,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, close to full Mint State. Substantial lustre accompanies an exacting strike, all flavored by very subtle pink-gold. 1578 1861 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,250.00 - or finer. A lustrous honey gold coin that is essentially free of any significant marks. 1579 1863'S' VF $650.00 Very Fine. Bright gold surfaces show some deeper red around the reliefs. Circulation is quite moderate but the surfaces offer a complement of bagmarks. 1580 1866 Motto. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $6,000.00 Wonderfully prooflike lustre drenches both sides of this splendid strike. Liberty's cheek and the obverse field show the scattered marks resulting from bag storage or shipment. NGC MS60. 1581 1868'S' CH AU $3,250.00 Choice About Uncirculated, on the very cusp of full Mint State. This high-quality coin's lustre is plentiful and the strike is full, the obverse field shows some light toning and a few widely distributed light marks. NGC AU58. 1582 1869'S' CH AU $1,700.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Vividly glowing lustre intensifies around the reliefs and devices on this boldly struck San Francisco coin, which shows only a few inconsequential marks. NGC AU55. 1583 1870'S' AU $2,250.00 About Uncirculated, on the cusp of full Mint State. A splendid strike and smooth Liberty head that is remarkably free of troublesome marks are the basis of this coin's exceptional quality. Although not rare as a date, specimens that are in or above this grade level are quite difficult to locate. Here is a coin sure to reward careful examination. NGC AU58. 1584 1871'S' CH AU $900.00 Choice About Uncirculated, approaching Mint State. Substantial glittering lustre and the most moderate wear define this wholly pleasing coin. The obverse displays the sprinkling of bagmarks that are universal for these large Gold coins but the overall visual quality of this coin can only be described as high. As with the 1870'S' above, the 1871'S' is not a rare date but is quite elusive...  more 1585 1872'CC' AU $2,400.00 About Uncirculated. Boldly detailed and showing a precise Carson City mintmark, this partly lustrous, lightly bagmarked coin reveals traces of a gentle wiping at some point in the past. One of 26,900 struck in this low-mintage year. ACG AU50. 1586 1872'CC' EF $2,200.00 Extremely Fine. Here is a highly presentable, circulated example of a key Carson City date. Red-gold surfaces are generally smooth and appealing with a few trivial marks. The obverse displays two short pinscratches in the left field. One of 26,900 struck. 1587 1873 Open 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,500.00 - virtually in the Choice category. A magnificent coin displaying a deep strike and essentially flawless, deeply glowing canary-yellow lustre of the greatest richness. 1588 1873 Open 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $850.00 Silky lustre gives a charming look to this example which has the pleasing color of a fine pale ale. A difficult coin to locate in high grades. 1589 1873 Open 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $600.00 Lustre is delightfully full and glowing. The obverse shows the familiar complement of scattered bagmarks while the lustrous reverse is nearly free of troubling marks. 1590 1875'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,500.00 - and nearly in the Choice ranking. Delightfully rich and satisfying red-gold lustre saturates all surfaces of this boldly struck coin, highlighting the perfection of such features as Liberty's cheek. PCGS MS62. 1591 1875'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $851.00 - or finer. Frosty lustre dances over the surfaces of this honey gold example. 1592 1876'CC' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,200.00 This yellow gold example displays incredibly prooflike surfaces despite light abrasions. The strike is a trifle weak at the right reverse. Here is a highly appealing example from the popular Carson City mint and is a very high quality survivor of 138,441 pieces struck. 1593 1876'CC' AU $1,100.00 Very strong About Uncirculated with semi-prooflike lustre covering both sides. A glass finds scattered marks and the rims are beveled rather than squared as often seen on Double Eagles of this busy decade. A glass finds some widely scattered marks of little visual importance. 1594 1876'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,900.00 - or finer. Here is a totally lustrous example of this important Centennial year date, boasting splendid glowing lustre, smooth cheek and refreshingly few field scuffs. Here is a high quality example of a San Francisco date that rapidly approaches non-collectible status in the higher grades. NGC MS62. 1595 1877 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,600.00 - or rather finer. Remarkable cameo devices thrust forward from vividly prooflike fields. While free of any trace of circulation, this coin is notably bagmarked on either side. ACG MS63DMPL. 1596 1877'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,200.00 - not far from Choice. Frosty lustre covers both sides, offering subtle cartwheel gleam and some relatively minor marks. PCGS MS62. 1597 1877'S' AU $550.00 About Uncirculated or a trifle finer. Although the obverse is bagmarked, this coin's beauty is assured by substantial overall lustre. 1598 1878, 1889'S' AU $1,350.00 Both About Uncirculated. Good strikes with moderate surface nicks, the first lemony in tone, the latter wheaten-gold. 2 pieces. 1599 1878'CC' EF $1,900.00 Extremely Fine. Some traces of lustre are retained around the reliefs, surfaces show evidence of a restrained dipping at some point with some light hairlines to be found under a glass. One of 13,180 struck of this desirable yet highly elusive date. 1600 1878'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,100.00 - or somewhat finer. Gleaming deep gold lustre on either side shows a scattering of bagmarks as so often seen on gold coins of these decades. PCGS MS61. 1601 1878'S' AU $550.00 About Uncirculated. Abundant lustre, minimal wear and a few light tics identify this pleasing example. 1602 1879'CC' AU $2,000.00 About Uncirculated. A bold strike and unusually high grade distinguish this example of 10,708 struck, Traces of an old encrustation are seen on the rim at 1:00 and fine, parallel hairlines recall wiping at some time in this coin's past. 1603 1879'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,600.00 - or better. This example of an elusive San Francisco date is characterized by bold lustre and a complement of bagmarks. NGC MS61. 1604 1880'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,700.00 - or a trifle finer. Bold cartwheel lustre joins a forceful strike, some bagmarks appear as nearly always on coins of this busy era. NGC MS61. 1605 1880'S' CH AU $550.00 Choice About Uncirculated.
