Medium gold surfaces show lustre concentrating around the well defined reliefs on either side. Actual circulation is distinctly limited, though the fields exhibit an even distribution of tiny marks consistent with bag storage long ago. Actual circulation must be described as very moderate. Close examination finds some faint surface roughness and signs of light polishing in the coin's past. ACG AU50. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $11,500.00 - with strong claims to the Choice category. An exacting strike is seen in the bold centrils of each obverse star, the eagle feathers and all of the delicate stripe lines in the reverse shield. This coin's lemon-yellow surfaces present the most tantalizing subdued lustre for outstanding appeal. PCGS MS62. 1352 1810 Br.1-A. Large Date, Large 5. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,500.00 The coin has an arm's length appearance of an even higher grade, but the surfaces have been lightly brightened. Struck from clashed dies over surfaces that exhibit yellow-gold in the center and a deeper shade at the border. A respectable example that should be closely inspected. 1353 1810 Br.1-A. Large Date, Large 5 AU $3,250.00 About Uncirculated. Deep yellow gold fields and devices contrast pleasantly with clear red-gold concentrating at the peripheries. An exceptionally sharp strike creates a tousle-haired Liberty possessing ''carved gem'' crispness and clarity. Bright golden surfaces show hints of a past dipping. The Crosslet 4 variety is decidedly scarcer and more difficult to locate than its Plain 4 brother. 1355 1834 Plain 4 EF $900.00 First head with a pronounced curve to the truncation of the bust. Extremely Fine and still displaying plenty of mint frost in the protected areas of the design. The feather definition on the reverse remains quite bold, and many of the obverse hair curls are still entirely evident. 1356 1834 Plain 4 EF $325.00 Extremely Fine. A pleasingly full strike results in bold detail even after some time in circulation. Bright yellow fields show evidence of cleaning at some time. 1357 1834 Plain 4 EF $260.00 Extremely Fine. Interesting brassy red-gold recalls cleaning long ago, careful examination reveals traces of an old deposit. 1358 1835 EF $380.00 Extremely Fine, close to Choice. Light gold lustre clings to the reliefs, close study reveals evidence of a light wiping on the lower obverse. 1359 1835 CH VF $275.00 Choice Very Fine. Liberty Head Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1360 1840'D' AU $1,300.00 About Uncirculated in terms of wear. The overall strike is very full, with a particularly clear 'D' mintmark. Close examination shows some smoothing of the cheek to eliminate a mark, and there is a field scratch above the eagle. 1361 1840'O' AU $1,200.00 About Uncirculated. Actual circulation is quite moderate, light yellow-gold fields and devices are framed by very high rims. Fields bear a few widely scattered marks, the New Orleans mintmark is small and located at near-midpoint between FIVE and the stem. 1362 1842'C' Large Date CH EF $1,501.00 Choice Extremely Fine. A sharp strike created bold detail which is still to be admired on this relatively high grade example of a Charlotte date of which only 4,595 were struck. The tiny 'C' is positioned between the 'V' in FIVE and the tip of the arrow feather, light gold surfaces are faintly matte. 1363 1842'D' Small Date CH AU $7,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated, closely approaching Mint State. Pervasive yellow-gold offers tantalizing reddish highlights and a crisp strike with clear Dahlonega mintmark. PCGS AU55. 1364 1843'C' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,200.00 A Mint State coin in terms of wear. However, both obverse and reverse display evidence of a prior cleaning. There is a small reverse rim nick at the upper right. 1365 1844'O' CH AU $850.00 Choice About Uncirculated. The time this coin spent in circulation was brief, and the delicate red-gold fields and devices show virtually no wear. Surfaces show a tantalizing frostiness recalling salt water recoveries from Florida's Seminole War era. 1366 1845'D' AU $3,000.00 About Uncirculated. Lustre is retained around the precise devices, stars and legend. Although 90,629 were struck at this Southern Branch Mint, the date is elusive today in all grades and downright rare in About Uncirculated and finer, assuring rarity to match its beauty. 1367 1850'C' F $500.00 Fine. Overall circulation makes this grade appropriate, but the reverse shows a Charlotte mintmark 'C' that is exceptionally weak, showing the top serif of the letter but little of its curving body. 1368 1853 AU $360.00 About Uncirculated. Substantial lustre is evident especially around the reliefs, and the coin is free of major marks. 1369 1854'C' BU $1,000.00 The mintmark is extremely weak and in fact, is only partially visible with a great deal of effort. The dies match those of Douglas Winter's variety 22-J. The '1' in the date on the obverse is virtually touching the bust, while the '4' is centered in the field between the bust and the denticles. On the reverse, a hint of the bottom curve of the mintmark is visible midway between the olive stem and...  more 1370 1856'O' CH EF $3,000.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Bright golden fields display very fine hairlines. Devices, stars and legend are pleasingly bold. This date is rare in any grade above Extremely Fine, and the present example compares favorably with the Eliasberg and Norweb coins. Just 10,000 were struck of this date. 1371 1861 CH AU $650.00 Choice About Uncirculated and bordering on full Mint State. Bright mint lustre over surfaces that have an average strike. Some field abrasion is present but does not detract. An acceptable example of this No Motto type coin. 1372 1877'CC' CH VF $2,400.00 Choice Very Fine. Light circulation did not affect the very crisp devices, a whisper of lustre remains around the reliefs. One of 8,680 struck of this desirable Carson City date and a splendid coin for Type or date collection. 1373 1879 CH EF $600.00 Extremely Fine, 1880 About Uncirculated, 1880'S' Choice Extremely Fine. A pleasing trio, each with some degree of satiny lustre. 3 pieces. 1374 1880, 1881, 1886'S' AU $600.00 Extremely Fine, About Uncirculated and Extremely Fine. A decent trio with clear, bold types and good color. 3 pieces. 1375 1880, 1885 EF to AU $460.00 Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. Silky mint lustre clings to the devices of each of these Philadelphia Mint coins. 2 pieces. 1376 1880 AU $375.00 Very Fine. Reverse solder remnants; 1886 Very Fine/Extremely Fine. Short scratches at the lower reverse; 1899 About Uncirculated. Polished. Heavy lacquer deposits. 3 pieces. 1377 1880 CH AU $300.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Mustard gold with a good deal of lustre; 1901'S' Brilliant Uncirculated. Mustard gold but lightly dipped. 2 pieces. 1378 1880'S' AU $525.00 About Uncirculated or nearly so in terms of wear.
