Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $4,000.00 - a virtual Gem example of the classic key to the Indian Cent series, one of 851,600 business strikes produced. Here is a breath-takingly beautiful example of a date sought in any condition but excessively rare at this high end of the condition spectrum. Fields and devices are nearly entirely mint red with faint hints of the most mellow natural golden brown apparent to a diligent seeker. 1446 1877 10¢. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $150.00 Assertive lustrous flash enriches both sides of this charming coin, boldly struck and wholly satisfying in its fullness of detail. One of 7,310,000 business strikes produced at Philadelphia. 1447 1877'CC' 10¢. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $1,500.00 A meticulous strike is complemented by a wealth of deeply frosty silver mint lustre, giving this coin its outstanding visual impact and undeniable appeal. Although 7,700,000 Dimes were struck at Carson City, few high grade specimens were saved in the years before Augustus G. Heaton popularized collecting by mintmark in 1893. 1448 1877'S' 10¢. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $500.00 - with claims to Gem. Semi-prooflike fields radiate bold visual appeal, their assertive flash accenting the high quality of this coin's exacting strike. The San Francisco Mint produced 2,340,000 Dimes, but contemporary collectors were not yet interested in mintmarks and comparatively few high grade examples survive today. 1449 1877 25¢. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $600.00 - nearly Choice. Intensely lustrous silver-white fields and devices are of arresting visual quality. The Philadelphia Mint produced 10,911,200 business strikes, but coins of this brilliant quality are elusive. 1450 1877'CC' 25¢. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $950.00 - with the forceful lustrous beauty of yet higher grade. Both 7's show bold recutting at their bases and Liberty's face bears subtle evidence of die rust. 'CC' mintmark is widely spaced on the wonderfully reflective reverse. This delightful coin is undoubtedly among the finer examples remaining from a Carson City mintage of 4,192,000. 1451 1877'S' 25¢. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $400.00 Stark silver-white surfaces complement a precise impression of the dies. Reverse shield shows very thin stripes on this example of 8,996,000 Quarters struck at San Francisco. Here is a thoroughly pleasing coin for a type or date collection. 1452 1877 50¢. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $400.00 This coin's sharply struck devices and smoothly reflective fields offer a steel-toned obverse and glowing gold reverse with an arc of electric blue at the upper rim. Philadelphia produced 8,304,000 business strikes this year. 1453 1877'CC' 50¢. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,400.00 - with claims to a higher grade. Immaculate flashing silver fields and crisp devices create a level of visual quality seldom seen on minor coins of this Nevada Branch Mint. '1' in the date shows a line extending right from the foot. The 'CC' mintmark slants down sharply to the left. Carson City struck 1,420,000 Half Dollars, but as noted above, contemporary collectors took little or no...  more 1454 1877'S' 50¢. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $800.00 - and on the cusp of full Gem. This coin's vivid strike combines with shimmering silver lustre of amazing richness to create irresistible visual appeal. Only an inconspicuous reverse reeding mark separates this example from a distinctly higher grade. A mintage of 5,356,000 may seem adequate, but only a handful survive in the highest grades. 1455 1877 Trade $1.00. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $500.00 Fields and devices are bathed in silver lustre. Liberty's head shows limited detail as so often seen and a few scattered bagmarks may be observed. This year's 3,039,200 business strikes were mostly shipped overseas to be subjected to hard usage and ''chop marking'' by Chinese merchants. 1456 1877'CC' Trade $1.00. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $13,000.00 - only an insignificant field scuff from fully Gem. A strike of nearly medallic perfection is highlighted by richest silver frost. Carson City struck 534,000 pieces in this low-mintage year and the few examples existing today at the Choice level are eagerly sought. 1457 1877'S' Trade $1.00. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $2,800.00 - a whisper from the Gem category. Richly gleaming lustre offers a hint of peripheral gold. Strike is unusually precise in all respects and this splendidly reflective example would easily attain Gem status were it not for a hit on the eagle's right wing. Despite a mintage of 9,519,000 pieces, specimens in such high grade are exceedingly elusive. 1458 1877 Gold $1.00. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,200.00 - with bold cameo beauty suggesting Gem. The sharpness of the strike is seen in a partial wire rim, full LIBERTY on the headband and magnificently full gleaming red-gold lustre. One of only 3,900 business strikes. Dannreuther-Garrett list 33 appearances of this date at auction over a decade, more than half of which were in distinctly lower grades. Here is a coin that would be difficult...  more 1459 1877 $2.50. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $9,000.00 - with the fantastic eye appeal normally reserved for Gem. This exceptional coin is a very early strike possessing amazing cameo prooflike beauty seldom encountered in Gold coins of this busy decade. A meticulous strike results in magnificent detail for this desirable example of the 1,632 business strikes produced by the Philadelphia Mint. Splendid bright golden lustre drenches both sides of this precisely struck San Francisco coin, one of 35,400 struck. While this mintage is obviously low on the face of it, more dramatic yet is the Dannreuther-Garrett 10-year auction record which contains just nine appearances for this San Francisco rarity, only one in higher grade, two in lower. Boldly struck with only a wisp of wear to be found on the highest points, the fields show some pinpoint tics. One of 1,468 business strikes produced at Philadelphia. Over a decade, 39 examples appeared at auction, according to the Dannreuther-Garrett reference. Of that total, 19 were in lower grade than this scintillating...  more 1462 1877 $5.00. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $18,000.00 - with solid claims to Gem. This extraordinary coin boasts sharp and pleasing cameo contrast of bold mirror fields and very finely frosted, needle-sharp devices. The Philadelphia Mint produced only 1,320 business strikes of this date, possible as part of the continued fallout from the Panic of '73. The 1877 is totally elusive in any state of preservation, downright rare in Mint State....  more 1463 1877'CC' $5.00 CH EF $8,250.00 Choice Extremely Fine and not far from higher grade. Strike is full and even, wear is extremely moderate and much frosty lustre remains around this coin's problem-free reliefs and high rims. This is a relatively high grade for a Carson City date which saw only 8,680 struck. The 10-year Dannreuther-Garrett reference records only 20 appearances of this Branch Mint date at auction, and...  more 1464 1877'S' $5.00 EF $800.00 Extremely Fine, a scattered scuff or two from Choice. Strongly impressed devices glow with surrounding lustre. This satisfying coin is one of 26,700 struck at San Francisco, of which a mere fraction survive for today's numismatists. Dannreuther-Garrett show only 15 appearances at auction over 10 years, itself a graphic commentary on this Branch Mint's actual rarity. 1465 1877 $10.00 CH EF $5,000.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Lustre and a hint of original prooflike flash outlines the reliefs, Liberty is boldly detailed with a delightfully smooth cheek, the eagle is fully feathered. This moderately circulated coin is in fact a relatively high grade survivor of a business strike mintage of only 797 pieces. Dannreuther-Garrett record 42 appearances at auction over a decade, only six in...  more 1466 1877'CC' $10.00 AU $11,500.00 About Uncirculated. Lightly circulated, leaving a bold lustrous and prooflike outline to the reliefs and with additional lustre in the protected areas. Surfaces are a charming wheat-gold hue with hints of richer rose in and around the devices and legends. One of 3,332 struck at Carson City. Dannreuther-Garrett show 29 auction appearances, only six in this comparatively high grade. Here...  more 1467 1877'S' $10.00 CH AU $1,700.00 Extremely Fine. Boldly struck and showing uncomplicated circulation, this coin boasts well detailed devices and a high, blob-like San Francisco mintmark. One of 17,000 struck, of which only 29 appear in Dannreuther-Garrett, none above Choice About Uncirculated. Here is a Branch Mint date almost unknown in any significantly higher grade than the present example. 1468 1877 $20.00. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,000.00 - on the threshold of fully Choice. Richly glowing yellow-gold cartwheel lustre distinguishes this example, which is only an insignificant tic or two from higher grade. Although Philadelphia Mint records show 397,650 business strikes, Dannreuther-Garrett list only 18 auction appearances for this date, 13 in grades comparable to this but exactly one finer. 1469 1877'CC' $20.00 CH AU $6,250.00 Choice About Uncirculated, nearly Mint State. Lustre is full and unblushing, complementing a lovely and boldly detailed strike. The Carson City Mint struck 42,565 pieces, and 68 appearances are recorded by Dannreuther-Garrett but most of these are below the present coin's high grade. This coin is certain to be a significant addition to some carefully chosen collection. 1470 1877'S' $20.00. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,100.00 - and only a wisp from the Choice category. At first glance this outstanding coin appears even nicer, but a glass and enough effort find faint bag storage abrasions. San Francisco struck 1,735,000 pieces in this active year, but the jump in value between basic Uncirculated and Choice gives an indication of its extraordinary scarcity in the higher grades. Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $4,000.00 An exquisite strike is the first of this coin's many attractions. Extensive mint red lingers on the glass-smooth surfaces along with a complement of light brown, both contrasting with a delightful sheen of tantalizing blue. One of 900 Proofs struck of this most sought-after Indian Cent date, almost as difficult to locate in higher Mint State grades as it is in Proof. 1472 1877 3¢ Nickel. Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $2,100.00 Flawless silvery lustre saturates both sides of this meticulously struck coin. The planchet was evidently carefully selected and shows none of the problems of granularity noted by the later Walter Breen in his comments on this date. A forceful strike resulted in near-perfection of detail, even on the highest points. Only 510 pieces were struck of this Proof-only date, which has been...  more 1473 1877 5¢. Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $2,500.00 - with claims to Gem. This specimen shows an extraordinary strike and remarkably sharp rims. Fields are generously reflective and the devices are fully crisp. The date shows a filled upper loop in '8' and there is a hair-thin struck-through line on the reverse. Here is another Proof-only date with 510 struck. The late Walter Breen's commentary on Proofs of this date proves that this example...  more 1474 1877 10¢. Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,000.00 Wonderfully uniform smoky steel toning overlies deeply glittering silver. One of 510 Proofs struck, and certainly among the finest now available. This coin's striking quality is dramatized by its partial wire rim and in its wealth of meticulous detail on both sides.
