4234 1838 No Drapery CH AU $1,000.00
1838 No Drapery. Choice About Uncirculated and ever so close to a full Mint State designation. The...
Choice About Uncirculated and ever so close to a full Mint State designation. The eagle's claws are closed and exhibit a pronounced curve. Boldly defined design features are complemented by a full measure of mint frost in the fields. Delicate wisps of subtle russet complete this specimen. This curved claw reverse is many times rarer than its straight claw counterpart.

- and a well struck, wonderfully lustrous example. Glowing, icy surfaces offer excellent definition on either side. Traces of peripheral gold on the obverse further enhance the lovely presentation of this specimen. Though wrongly considered by many to be a common date, specialists within this series recognize that locating Mint State examples of this caliber can be a very difficult task....  more

1853 Arrows and Rays. Brilliant Uncirculated and bathed in a handsome offering of russet-golden toning....
- and bathed in a handsome offering of russet-golden toning. A particularly well balanced strike augments fields and design elements that are free from any surface imperfections that require special mention. With this being a highly desirable example of this important one-year type coin, we certainly feel that a noteworthy degree of bidder participation is warranted.
4237 1853 Arrows and Rays CH AU $350.00
1853 Arrows and Rays. Choice About Uncirculated. Some interesting die clashing at the lower obverse...
Choice About Uncirculated. Some interesting die clashing at the lower obverse has resulted in rays emanating from the base of Liberty into the tops of the numerals in the date. Icy mint frost is accented by areas of peripheral russet-gold situated primarily on the obverse.
4238 1854 Arrows AU $220.00
1854 Arrows. About Uncirculated or thereabouts. Lapping of the obverse die has resulted in some disjointing...
About Uncirculated or thereabouts. Lapping of the obverse die has resulted in some disjointing of the drapery below Liberty's right elbow. A reverse die crack extends from the bottom point of the shield through the point of the stem, the right side of the 'D' in DOL, and on to the denticles. Frosty, silver-gray surfaces display hints of peripheral russet at the right reverse.
4239 1855'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,000.00
1855'S' Brilliant Uncirculated or better. The ends of the left and right arrows at the date almost...
- or better. The ends of the left and right arrows at the date almost touch the top point of the '1', and the central curve of the '5' respectively. A large reverse mintmark nearly touches the arrow feathers and stem (Briggs 2-C). The initial appearance is that of a near-Gem, however there is some evidence of an ever so gentle past cleaning. The coin has since acquired a lovely blush of lavender-rose...  more
4240 1858 Brilliant Proof BR PF $1,200.00
1858 Brilliant Proof, nearly worthy of a Choice distinction. As is the case with all known Proofs...
- nearly worthy of a Choice distinction. As is the case with all known Proofs of this issue, the '1' in the date shows doubling at the right side of its base. Cameo devices are afloat in lightly hairlined fields. Golden iridescence adorns the peripheries, and there are only a couple of minor interior lint marks in the fields. Though indications of the Proof mintage for this extremely elusive...  more

- and nearly of full Gem quality. Breen's Type I Obverse (single hair ribbon on Liberty) is paired with his Type II reverse (The eagle's eye is solid and convex). Briggs lists this variety as his 2-B Proof die pairing. The '1' in the date shows a thin base and long, thin serif. The reverse exhibits repunching at QUAR.DOL. that is most noticeable at 'QUA'. Deeply mirrored fields and cameo devices...  more

- with claims to the Gem category. Breen Type I obverse and reverse (the reverse exhibits a hollow eye on the eagle). The diagnostics of the coin offered here are consistent with Briggs' Proof variety 1-A (thick base to the '1' in the date, wide upright with a shorter, somewhat thicker serif; vertical lines 5, 6, and 7 do not touch the bottom of the shield on the reverse, spur lines run diagonally...  more
4243 1860 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $3,000.00
1860 Gem Brilliant Proof. Breen's Type II obverse (double hair ribbon on Liberty) is paired with a...
Breen's Type II obverse (double hair ribbon on Liberty) is paired with a Type I reverse. As is normally the case with Proofs of this date, there is some weakness at the left obverse stars that should not at all be taken into account when arriving at a suitable grade to assign to such a coin. Deep olive-emerald and delicate rose iridescence immerses either side. The underlying fields and design features...  more

- just on the cusp of a full Gem classification. Type II reverse. Watery mirrored fields and frosty devices are wonderfully enhanced by shades of pastel lilac, gold, and lavender iridescence. The visual allure of this coin is truly quite exceptional. According to Breen, of the 1,000 Proofs coined of this date, fewer than 400 were sold and the rest were melted.
4245 1862 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $1,700.00
1862 Choice Brilliant Proof with claims to the Gem category. Type II reverse as are all coins struck...
- with claims to the Gem category. Type II reverse as are all coins struck of this date. Splashes of peripheral russet encircle golden-tan interiors. The underlying legends and design elements are entirely frosty, and the fields retain excellent reflectivity. Only 550 Proofs were minted of this issue.

- and enjoying outstanding cameo contrast! Dazzling mirrored fields and deeply frosted devices are embellished by a lovely blush of violet-mauve iridescence on both the obverse and reverse. The strike is entirely sharp, and the presentation is impeccable! It goes without saying that the coin offered here is easily among the finest Cameo Proofs extant of this date. A paltry 460 Proofs were...  more

1864 Very Choice Brilliant Proof. Shades of pale gold and champagne-lavender iridescence augment well...
Shades of pale gold and champagne-lavender iridescence augment well mirrored fields. The devices, furthermore, are entirely frosty. Due to the scarcity of high grade business strikes of this date, there is an extra degree of demand for Proofs such as that offered here. The Proof mintage for this issue totals a mere 470 pieces.

- despite a tiny reverse rim mark at 7:30. There is a wonderful array of multicolored aqua-blue, rose, and olive-golden iridescence that is featured on either side. The reverse is particularly gorgeous. The underlying devices are quite sharp, and the fields, though lightly hairlined, retain excellent mirror surface. Very scarce as a Mint State business strike, and thus more highly pursued as...  more

- and enjoying well mirrored fields that surround sharp, cameo devices. The reverse is that of a solid Gem. Russet-golden centers are accented by hints of lilac and rose peripheral iridescence. This low mintage date is rare as a Mint State business strike, thus there is increased price pressure on attractive Proofs such as the coin offered here. The total mintage for this issue consists of only...  more

1867 Very Choice Brilliant Proof. Varying shades of olive-golden and russet toning are embellished...
Varying shades of olive-golden and russet toning are embellished by traces of pastel iridescence just inside the rims. Vibrant mirrored fields complement well frosted legends and design features. Rare as a business strike, thereby leading to increased demand for attractive Proofs such as this. A mere 625 Proofs and 20,000 business strikes were coined.
4251 1868 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $750.00

- and certainly warranting a higher grade were it not for an unfinished area in the left obverse field adjacent to the third and fourth stars. An enthralling mirror-glow surrounds cameo legends and devices and is accompanied by a hint of russet-golden toning at the peripheries. One of only 600 Proofs struck, this scarce date also offers a business strike mintage of just 29,400 coins.

- and offering pleasing overall color. Varying shades of olive-gray toning are accented by hints of emerald and rose iridescence. The reverse is entirely Choice, however there are too many obverse hairlines to justify such a grade for the entire coin. This elusive date enjoys the lowest total mintage for a Liberty Seated Philadelphia issue (600 Proofs and 16,000 business strikes) prior...  more

Copper, RE. 88.5 grains. Very Choice Brilliant Proof. William Barber's obverse design features a seated Liberty holding an olive branch in her left hand. Her right hand supports a shield draped with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. A cap and pole stands directly behind Liberty's right forearm. The reverse is that of the adopted Christian Gobrecht With Motto design. The surfaces enjoy wonderfully...  more

Blinding, fully radiant fields reveal only a very limited number of trivial lines. The legends and devices are incredibly sharp, and exhibit marvelously deep cameo contrast. The slightest blush of violet-mauve completes the visual allure of this beauty. In fact, we have no reservations in stating that the presently offered jewel is among the finest known Proofs of this date! One of only...  more

- despite some microscopic lint marks in the field and on the central obverse devices. An incredibly intense liquid-mirror glow bathes the fields on either side. The design elements, likewise, are needle-sharp and entirely frosty. In fact, the vibrancy and surface quality is as ''fresh'' as the day it was minted, and is aptly completed by a subtle blush of violet-mauve toning. An absolute beauty...  more

1873 No Arrows. Closed 3. Gem Brilliant Proof. Sharp, cameo-frosted legends and devices complement...
Sharp, cameo-frosted legends and devices complement outstanding quality, wonderfully mirrored fields. A trace of delicate jade accents the surfaces on both the obverse and reverse. Only 40,600 examples of this issue were struck, of which 600 were Proofs. Of the surviving Proof population, only a tiny percentage exhibit cameo devices.
4258 1873 Arrows. Brilliant Proof BR PF $650.00
1873 Arrows. Brilliant Proof, nearly a Choice specimen. Lightly hairlined fields are well mirrored...
- nearly a Choice specimen. Lightly hairlined fields are well mirrored on either side, and are framed by a trace of olive-gold at the peripheries. With the Proof mintage of this important two-year type coin being very limited (only 540 and 700 with Arrows Proofs were struck in 1873 and 1874 respectively), this issue is always highly pursued by collectors.

1874 Arrows. Very Choice Brilliant Proof despite fingerprint pattern toning in the right obverse field....
- despite fingerprint pattern toning in the right obverse field. In fact, were it not for the fingerprint, we would be very tempted to call this coin a full Gem. Glittering field radiance augments deeply frosted legends and design features. A shade of violet toning completes either side.

Type I reverse for this date with the letters in 'TATES' close at the bases. A very faint horizontal die scratch is visible on the reverse within the lower portion of the eagle's left wing. The reverse toning is an overly deep blend of lilac and gray, otherwise this specimen would warrant a slightly higher grade. The obverse displays a pleasant shade of olive-golden iridescence. One of a...  more
