Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,600.00 A glittering white coin that boasts strong cameo contrast with the mirror fields, and ample visual appeal. The surfaces are free of fly specks or hairlines, and this coin is as nice as most collectors are likely to encounter for this first year of issue, and single year type coin. As 1883 unfolded, enterprising folks determined that these new nickels could be gold plated and passed off...  more 4180 1883 With CENTS. Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $280.00 Attractive for the light nickel-blue hints on the obverse and reverse, but a few fly specks on the reverse limit the grade. Clean surfaces otherwise, and generally pleasing. This first year of issue was also popular with collectors, and a healthy 6,783 were struck at the time, a paltry sum considering the demand from collectors today. 4181 1884 Repunched Date. Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $170.00 The '1' of the date is sharply recut low, and traces of recutting are seen on the other digits, but they are far less dramatic. Light yellow hints over the reflective surfaces. Examination will find two peripheral fly specks on the obverse and some trivial hairlines. Although noted to be ''rare'' in Breen's Encyclopedia, further study is recommended since it is possible that many examples...  more 4182 1885 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $1,000.00 This is one of the key dates to the series, and as such is always in strong collector demand. The present coin has a few minor fly specks on the obverse, but on the reverse there is some minor green and dark residue on the lower half. A total of 3,790 were struck in Proof. As expected, this is not enough to go around. 4183 1886 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $480.00 Although overshadowed by the key date 1885 before it, this 1886 is quite scarce in its own right. The present coin shows some contrast between the mirror fields and devices, and a single fly speck near the rim above the fourth star. Faint hairlines limit the grade, but the visual appeal remains ample to represent this date. Mintage climbed to 4,290 for the Proofs of 1886. 4184 1887 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $400.00 Light golden toning over the surfaces and pleasing to the eye. This one lacks the fly specks usually found, and hence is quite desirable. A scarcer Proof issue with a coinage of just 2,960 pieces. A few minute signs of contact kept this from a Gem grade. 4185 1888 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $200.00 The obverse and reverse sport a streak of golden toning and the fields show the desirable sky-blue tint near the rims. Traces of green fly specks are found with a loupe, and these limit the grade. A thin lintmark is found on the lower portion of Liberty's neck to the date below. 4186 1889 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $160.00 A reflective coin that has delicate gold toning on both sides. Two trivial fly specks are present, one behind Liberty's eye, the other on her jaw. No other surface problems or disturbances are readily found. Slightly scarce with 3,336 coined in Proof format. 4187 1890 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $190.00 Pleasing for the light coppery-gold toning over the surfaces, but a trace of haze and some hairlines kept this from a higher grade. Liberty has a couple of minor planchet lines on her face, and a fly speck has settled in behind her head. 4188 1891 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $160.00 This one shows the common streaky gold toning which has the appearance of a fine wood grain. Likely caused by the planchet preparation process, which imparted slight texturing into the planchets as they were rolled out. Faint hairlines are present, but lacking the fly specks often seen. 4189 1892 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $225.00 Especially bright and attractive for the light yellow toning over blazing mint frost on the devices. Trivial signs of handling and a speck on the upper wreath from a higher grade, but the eye appeal remains strong. Coinage of Proofs halted after 2,740 were produced. 4190 1893 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $170.00 Another desirable Proof that displays the familiar textured woodgrain toning on the obverse, less so on the reverse. Clean surfaces with a tiny speck found in the field near Liberty's upper curl. Total minted in Proof for the year was 2,195 pieces. 4191 1894 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $225.00 Toned with a touch of nickel-blue with icy reflectivity. The obverse is nearly a Gem, but the reverse has some traces of carbon and haze, possibly from a fingerprint. A scarce date with fewer issued for circulation and in Proof, with a reported Proof mintage of 2,632. Hence, demand stays high for this date in all grades. 4192 1895 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $375.00 Another scarce date in Proof with a mintage of just 2,062 pieces. This one retains the delicate reflective fields and the devices show the desired frostiness. Free of fly specks and hairlines, which are a fact of life for the majority of those that survive from this issue. 4193 1896 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $250.00 Bluish-gold on both sides but for a trace of a fingerprint on the obverse and flecks of carbon scattered about. Well struck and still appealing for the date collector. A token 1,862 were coined in the Proof format. Not many retain so much eye appeal. 4194 1897 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $190.00 Light golden toning over the mirror fields and frosted devices. No obverse fly specks, and just one on the reverse, that residing above the 'IT' of UNITED. Another limited mintage of 1,938 pieces for collectors. 4195 1898 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $325.00 This one has lovely blue and gold hues over both sides with a trace of haze. The lower obverse has a minor fingerprint, with the attendant carbon traces and delicate patterns now present in the right obverse field. A scant 1,795 were coined in Proof. This is certainly one of the nicer examples around today. 4196 1899 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $650.00 A thoroughly satisfying coin that boasts the desirable delicate blue, gold and yellow hints on both sides, and minimal fly specks. Abundant eye appeal and excellent surface quality keep this one in the desired Gem classification. A wonderful coin to represent the issue. 4197 1900 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $325.00 Toned with a trace of gold, blue and pink on both sides, with traces of carbon present from ancient handling. No real surface problems, and this coin is quite attractive for the grade. A total of 2,262 were coined to bring to a close the Nineteenth Century. 4198 1901 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $180.00 A well mirrored coin that shows reflectivity on the devices as well as the fields. Examination will discover a few minor carbon flecks and a trace of haze, both common to these early Proof Nickels. A total of 1,985 were struck to bring in the Twentieth Century. 4199 1902 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $170.00 A desirable example of this date, but there are a couple of minor fly specks visible with a loupe and a nick near the point of Liberty's crown. Faint hairlines are present, along with a trace of coppery-gold toning. Scarce with a mintage of 2,018. 4200 1903 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $110.00 A couple of carbon flecks from a higher grade, mostly before but a few on Liberty's face. Streaky gold and hazy toning on both sides. Another scarce issue, with 1,790 coined in Proof. This one is finer than most seen despite its minor problems. 4201 1904 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $150.00 With traces of four stars impressed along the reverse edge. This mint error must have been caused when another struck coin lay partially along the present example for a second but much weaker blow from the dies. Portions of four obverse stars are impressed along the left side of the reverse rim, and slight indentations are found from the edge of the second coin at the top and bottom of the...  more 4202 1905 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $400.00 Toned with an attractive layer of light bluish-gold on both sides. Scattered and minor carbon flecks are present, best seen with a loupe. The devices are pleasing, with ample mint frost to produce a slight cameo effect. Another scarce issue with 2,152 coined. 4203 1906 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $190.00 Close to a higher grade but slightly limited by a couple of trivial carbon specks on the obverse, and a dusting of delicate gold and blue toning on both sides. Proof sales faltered a bit during this period, with 1,725 issued. Another fine collector coin. 4204 1907 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $300.00 Gold and blue hints on the surfaces, and attractive. There are some faint signs of carbon on both sides. Proof mintage dropped to 1,475 for 1907, one of the lower issues of the series. Another good choice for the date or type collector. 4205 1908 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $300.00 A lovely example of this date, with no signs of carbon fly specks on the obverse, and just a trace on the lower right reverse. Slightly hazy from the passage of time, but boldly executed by the dies. The mintage for the year came in at 1,620 pieces, hardly enough to meet demand today. 4206 1909 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $340.00 A very pleasing coin that has delicate gold toning over the frosty devices, and a few minor carbon flecks. Mintages significantly increased, probably due to the cessation of the Indian Cent and release of the new Lincoln Cent in 1909. The total reported for 1909 is 4,763 Liberty Nickels in Proof. 4207 1910 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $375.00 Deep cameo devices throughout and highly attractive. There is a scattering of minute specks on the devices which keep this from a higher grade, best seen with a strong loupe. The strike is very sharp, with a high wire edge around portions of the rim. A total of 2,405 were coined in Proof. 4208 1911 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $375.00 Toned with a splash of bright orange-gold on the lower obverse with magenta highlights. Minimal signs of specks or hairlines, and this one has strong eye appeal. The Proof mintage fell off again in 1911, back to 1,733 pieces. This one is certainly quite desirable.
