Nickel, Plain Edge GEM BR PF $5,250.00 Gem Brilliant Proof with Frosted Cameo Devices. The obverse design is the regular issue dies, the reverse is the regular issue design adapted in 1867 without the rays. The surfaces are bright and reflective save for a hint of delicate gold toning mixed with a hint of nickel blue haze in the fields. Examination will discover a couple of minute specks and a hairline or two, but this...  more 4161 1867 With Rays. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $400.00 An average strike on the devices combines with light nickel-gray hues. Like the copper-nickel alloy Flying Eagle and Indian cents, the Philadelphia Mint soon confirmed that the 75% nickel and 25% copper alloy on the Cents was too hard, and as seen on these early Shield nickels, even reduced to 25% nickel and 75% copper, the planchets were still very hard and caused early and severe damage...  more 4162 1867 No Rays. Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $600.00 Light steel-gray in color and still attractive despite scattered hairlines from an old wiping. A couple of pin-prick sized specks are found if studied with a strong loupe. The strike is full and complete, and this Proof should suit most collectors who appreciate the rarity of this first year of issue type coin that now lacks the rays around the denomination. This was the adopted style...  more 4163 1868 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $250.00 A lovely example of this scarce Proof date. The surfaces have some faint hairlines and a minute speck or two, visible with a strong loupe. A curling lint mark is found extending off the upper point of one of the left stars on the reverse toward the '5'. Traces of cloudiness, but this one is finer than usually encountered from the small Proof issue of 600 pieces. 4164 1869 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $400.00 Generally bright and reflective, with a blush of typical nickel haze and scattered dark fly specks. A boldly executed coin with no other surface problems. This issue matched that of the 1868 with a scant 600 pieces struck in Proof. 4165 1870 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $275.00 The present coin shows decent contrast with well frosted devices which float on a mirror sea. A couple of dark fly specks from a higher grade, but fewer than often encountered. A pleasing coin for the date collector. 4166 1871 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $750.00 The surfaces on this coin are exceptional as they lack the usual scattering of fly specks and the hairlines are faint at best. Evenly struck and well preserved. Proof issues halted after 960 were coined for the year. 4167 1872 Gem Brilliant Proof. Breen 2492. Doubled Die Obverse GEM BR PF $275.00 A desirable coin for the clean surfaces and good eye appeal. There are some faint fly specks on the upper reverse. Well frosted on the devices with good contrast present. No other surface problems are apparent. The obverse shows slight doubling on the shield, and this is fairly common on Proofs and even some business strikes for the year. Curiously, the base of the 'S' in CENTS is broken, perhaps...  more 4168 1873 Closed 3. Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $750.00 A sterling coin that boasts well frosted devices on the obverse, more mirrored on the reverse. There is a minor lint mark above the shield which crosses some of the devices and wreath. Free of fly specks or contact marks, and a lovely example of this date. All Proof Nickels of this year are of the ''Closed 3'' variety, and were probably struck early in the year for sets and collectors....  more 4169 1874 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $400.00 Brilliant, original surfaces are vibrant and clean. No fly specks are present, and the devices show ample frost to create the desired cameo effect, particularly on the obverse. No hairlines of any consequence are found, and this is a coin which would be hard to improve. Proofs issued for the year fell in number to 700 pieces as the United States economy slowed greatly for a few years...  more 4170 1875 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $950.00 Well cameoed on the obverse, with strong frost on the devices and clean surfaces. A hint of yellow-gold starting to form in the fields, but lacking the usual fly specks. A lot of eye appeal for the grade, and there are no faults worthy of mention. Proof mintage remained at 700 coins for the year. 4171 1876 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $600.00 A fine coin for the grade which has some contrast on the obverse, less so on the reverse. Two or three minor fly specks can be seen with a loupe, but these are offset by the attractive surfaces and nickel-gray color. Doubling from the strike is found on 'TRUST' and the date. The Centennial year issue saw greater demand, with 1,150 Proof coins issued for collectors. 4172 1877 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $2,500.00 Boldly executed by the dies, with no signs of weakness. A later striking that lacks the bold cameo contrast seen on the first few dozen coins struck. Examination will discover a few wispy hairlines and minute specks, which limited the grade. Scarce with a mintage of 510 pieces, and no business strikes for collectors, keeping demand high for these Proofs. A desirable example. 4173 1878 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,300.00 A beautiful coin that boasts fresh, original surfaces that display a hint of light yellow in the fields, and none of the usual fly specks or hairlines. Outstanding eye appeal and surface quality for this more plentiful issue, with a mintage of 2,350 pieces. This is probably one of the better examples to survive. 4174 1879/8 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,000.00 A regal example of this curious overdate issue, with well preserved fields and surfaces. There are just two tiny fly specks, one in the central stripe of the shield near the base, the other below the 'F' in OF, and these are quite minor. There are very few examples of overdates in any Proof coinage, as the Philadelphia Mint normally used the best dies available. Demand continued strong at the...  more 4175 1880 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $550.00 This coin has full deep cameo devices on the obverse, a bit less contrasting on the reverse. Visually very appealing and bordering on a Superb grade. No fly specks detract, and the surfaces show none of the usual distracting hairlines. Interestingly, the first '8' is attached to the shield ball at the base, as the date logo punch was placed too high on this die. A delightful example...  more 4176 1881 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $600.00 Excellent quality for the grade, with no fly specks or hairlines readily apparent. The strike is full and sharp. Although the Proof issues are available with 3,575 struck, the 1881 is a very low mintage for circulation strikes with a scant 68,000 produced. Thus most date collectors end up with a Proof specimen to represent this date in their collections. 4177 1882 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $325.00 With frosty cameo white devices. An impressive coin for the grade with only a hint of shadowy specks on the surfaces, and strong visual appeal. The surfaces are attractive, and the strike bold. The Proof mintage dropped a bit to 3,100 pieces for the year. 4178 1883 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $250.00 Bright and attractive, but there is a trace of verdigris in the obverse motto and a hint of yellow-gold haze on the reverse. Well contrasted on the obverse, with abundant frost on the devices. Moderate fly specks are found with a loupe.
