Deep greenish-gold toning over surfaces that have been lightly cleaned. The strike is adequate and gives this coin a good look. 2211 1834 Large Head AU $480.00 About Uncirculated, with claims to a higher grade. This wheat gold example is boldly struck and displays a wealth of detail. Some light lines are found in the fields and there are a few trivial rim ticks that are not overly distracting. A good deal of lustre remains, giving this specimen a handsome look. 2212 1839'D' EF $3,750.00 Extremely Fine. This wide-rimmed obverse shows the Dahlonega mintmark resting atop the 3, the crudely doubled 9 firmly touches the lowest curl. What was once thought to be a 9/8 overdate researchers now call a blundered 9 rather, but the overdate designation lives on among many collectors. There are some scattered rim nicks on both sides including a decent size one on the obverse. Some of the reverse design is missing in spots due to die polishing done at the Mint. Liberty Head Quarter Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2214 1840'C' CH EF $1,600.00 Choice Extremely Fine. A pleasing example of this elusive date. Lightly worn surfaces retain a satisfying amber gold patina. A small obverse lamination is faintly apparent adjacent to Liberty's chin. 2215 1842'C' EF $2,500.00 Extremely Fine, perhaps a bit better but the coin has been gently cleaned and exhibits a scratch that extends from the tip of the bust to the eye. The strike is weak in the central area of the reverse which is diagnostic of this date. Greenish-gold toning adds respectability to this scarce date of which only 6,729 pieces were struck. 2216 1849'C' VF $1,000.00 Very Fine. Traces of underlying lustre are apparent on this gently worn but visually appealing coin. Perhaps lightly cleaned some time ago. 2217 1851 EF $425.00 Extremely Fine; 1852'O', 1853 Very Fine. All coins display moderate wear, two offer varying hints of clear red-gold toning. 3 pieces. 2218 1852 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $280.00 - with claims to the Choice category. A delightful strike is made more fascinating by a suffusion of the most delicate clear rose on both sides. 2219 1852 AU $240.00 About Uncirculated. A bold strike and only the faintest wear on the highest points define this generally lustrous example of a significant pre-Civil War date. 2220 1854'S' Fine F / VG $140,000.00 - or a bit better in terms of wear. An incredibly rare coin that is seldom offered and exudes the historic Gold Rush era. The surfaces have some light verdigris on Liberty in her hair curls and crown close to her ear. Pleasing for the grade, with no distracting problems expected for a coin with this much circulation. Identifiable by a minute 'V' shaped indentation nearly touching Liberty's head...  more 2221 1855'C' AU $4,500.00 About Uncirculated in terms of condition but the coin has been gently cleaned, leaving a series of hairlines on the surfaces. The strike is decent for this date and there are no other detractions beside the cleaning. A very scarce date with only 3,677 pieces struck with no where near as many surviving examples in the numismatic community. 2222 1857'O' EF $330.00 Extremely Fine. A problem-free example of this New Orleans Mint Quarter Eagle. Light friction is restricted to the highest points. 2223 1861 New Reverse. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $260.00 - and near-Choice. Pleasing yellow-gold fields provide a satisfying glow, a glass finds a trivial mark or two. 2224 1878 AU $180.00 About Uncirculated. Here is an attractive coin that shows a considerable amount of orange-gold mint frost. A coin that is quite pleasing for the grade. 2225 1879 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,200.00 - or finer. Radiant satiny lustre and meticulous strike give this specimen the look of a higher grade. 2226 1895 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,000.00 - with claims to Choice. Satiny mint bloom dances over the surfaces of this well struck example. A trivial obverse rim mark at 9:00 is hard to see without the aid of magnification. 2227 1896 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $300.00 This specimen exhibits full icy mint frost, however there is some degree of minor flatness that is evident at the obverse high points. Only 19,070 business strikes were minted of this date. 2228 1897 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,500.00 - and displaying the vibrant red-gold lustrous beauty of a higher grade. Here is an outstanding example of a later date offering what can only be called exceptional quality and dynamic visual appeal. 2229 1899 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,600.00 - bordering on fully Gem. This turn-of-the-century Gold piece offers a rare quality of strike, lustre and detail that will repay the most careful consideration by the collector seeking the finest. 2230 1901 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $2,200.00  Luxuriant, satiny smooth lustre defines this perfectly even, orange-gold specimen. Here is a well struck and attractive specimen that would be ideal for a high quality U.S. Gold Type Set. 2231 1901 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,200.00 - with claims to Choice. Glowing cartwheel lustre complements an exacting strike. 2232 1905 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,300.00 - and offering the initial visual allure of a full Gem. Rich yellow-golden fields and devices are drenched in satin-velvet mint bloom. The surface quality of this evenly struck specimen is far superior to that encountered on the typical survivor from this issue. 2233 1905 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $800.00 A near-Gem offering deeply reflective lustre, a faint obverse stain appears at 9:00. 2234 1905 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $300.00 A well struck coin with nice lustre and a good appearance. There are some light hairlines but they do not seriously detract from this coin's beauty. 2235 1906 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $6,000.00 Deep gold mirror fields support lightly frosted reliefs and devices of breath-taking quality. Close examination reveals a few minute field tics that alone keep this glittering coin from higher grade classification.
