Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1943 1840 CH AU $1,800.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Substantial gleaming lustre distinguishes this early Philadelphia date, which Akers calls ''rare and underrated in all grades.'' Such little wear as can be found is suggested by fine field lines of little visual importance. Overall appeal is that of Mint State. 1944 1840'C' AU $8,000.00 Strong About Uncirculated or finer. Boldest, sharply squared rims protect boldly defined devices. Fields show surviving lustre around the reliefs, a few minuscule tics can be found with effort. Here is a Branch Mint coin of significant quality, one of 18,956 struck. 1945 1843 AU $160.00 About Uncirculated. This coin displays limited circulation, an obverse edge tic and hairlines recalling a past cleaning. 1946 1843'D' Small 'D' CH EF $2,600.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Pale yellow gold toning over lightly bagmarked surfaces. The strike is decent but not entirely full. The small mintmark variety which Winter states should sell for a significant premium over the more common medium 'D' variety. NGC EF45. 1947 1843'D' Small 'D' EF $2,000.00 Extremely Fine and a strong representative of the grade. A second example. This Dahlonega strike is quite full and actual wear is light. Some hairlines and tiny marks create a frosty look of some fascination. 1948 1844 AU $180.00 About Uncirculated. An old cleaning accents the smooth reliefs against the lightly hairlined fields. 1949 1844'O' CH AU $1,700.00 Choice About Uncirculated, a whisper away from full Mint State. Red-gold lustre is intense around the high rims, stars and letters. A few light handling marks are noted, along with a few trivial hairlines in the flashing fields adding to the coin's forceful appeal. 1950 1845 EF $175.00 Extremely Fine. Moderate circulation and red-gold outlining the reliefs define this coin. Careful examination finds signs of a very gentle cleaning. 1951 1845'D' AU $5,000.00 Strong About Uncirculated or better. Partial lustre clings to the bold reliefs on this example of a Dahlonega date of which Akers writes, ''Very Fine and Extremely Fine coins are all that are normally available.'' This coin will repay close examination. 1952 1846 Large Date CH AU $145.00 Choice About Uncirculated in strict terms of circulation. Devices are bold but the fields show fine hairlines from an old cleaning. 1953 1847 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $4,500.00 Splendid honey-gold surfaces show the bold detail of a crisp strike. The reverse has a somewhat prooflike quality to it. The entire coin is marvelously frosty. 1847 is not a particular rare date, but any No Motto Half Eagle in Choice Mint State is a rarity indeed. 1954 1847 Repunched 7 CH EF $200.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Outstanding surface quality results from deep gold fields contrasting with darker red-gold outlining the reliefs. 1955 1847'C' EF $1,350.00 Extremely Fine. Bold devices stand out from bright yellow fields bearing partial lustre. The Charlotte mintmark is bold and placed high, close to the stem. Close study reveals criss-crossing hairline scratches above the eagle. 1956 1849 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,600.00 - perhaps a bit better. Prooflike fields magnify the moderate amount of abrasion that is found on this No Motto coin. The color is a pale orange-gold. The strike is relatively strong for this date. Overall a decent example for the type collector. 1957 1849'C' CH EF $1,900.00 Choice Extremely Fine with claims to a higher grade. Pleasing pale copper-red toning surrounds the reliefs, a minor obverse edge bruise can be sought out at 4:30. Overall this is a highly satisfactory example of this North Carolina Branch Mint coinage. 1958 1850'D' AU $6,000.00 About Uncirculated. Pale yellow-gold toning over moderately bagmarked surfaces. Well struck, with the mintmark only a trifle weak. A scarce date, of which this example is surely one of the finest available surviving specimens. 1959 1852 CH EF $190.00 Choice Extremely Fine or better. Wear is reasonably moderate and pale golden surfaces offer plenty of mint lustre congregating around the reliefs. 1960 1852'D' CH AU $4,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated and boasting the lustrous excellence of a higher grade. The strike shows rounded rims and indistinct denticulation, joining rich glowing lustre to produce a beautiful satiny effect. Most examples of this Dahlonega date listed in the Dannreuther-Garrett auction report are in lower grade. 1961 1852'D' AU $3,250.00 About Uncirculated. A second. Here is a flashy yellow-gold example with no major blemishes. A healthy dose of mint frost is found clinging to protected areas. Dahlonega gold is always in demand and this coin should be no exception. 1962 1854 AU $175.00 About Uncirculated in strike and detail. Devices and generally mark-free fields show hairlining from a harsh cleaning. 1963 1854'D' AU $3,400.00 About Uncirculated. Boldly raised stars, legend and devices stand out from almost wholly lustrous fields for outstanding quality. Although 56,413 were struck, higher grade examples are seldom encountered. Wide rims are typically bevelled on this charming coin. 1964 1855'S' VG $200.00 Very Good. Bold date and mintmark, deep yellow-gold surfaces define this early San Francisco piece. Scarce. 1965 1856 CH AU $550.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Substantial lustre highlights an exacting strike and crisp devices on this pleasing Philadelphia coin. 1966 1860 $5.00. Judd 272 (Low R-6). Copper, RE. Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $5,500.00 27mm, 2.47mm thick. 9.62 grams, 148.4 grains. This obverse bears an elegant Liberty head l. in Phrygian cap with three large stars forming a headband, a tiny date below. The reverse presents a very small eagle with spread wings, E PLURIBUS UNUM on a tiny scroll held in the beak. Lettering is unusually small and closely spaced on this highly distinctive design created by James B. Longacre....  more 1967 1867 AU $2,650.00 About Uncirculated. A low mintage coin with only 6,920 pieces struck. Traces of sunset orange frost are apparent among the lightly worn devices. A very attractive example of this rare date that should elicit spirited bidding. PCGS AU53. 1968 1875 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $140,000.00 - essentially Gem in its delightful overall quality. Glittering mirror fields complement precise and lightly frosted reliefs. This is an exciting date for collectors from any perspective. It boasts only 20 Proofs and 200 business strikes. Attrition over 129 years has, of course, further reduced the availability of this important date in any state. An idea of the on-the-ground rarity of...  more 1969 1878 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $52,500.00 - with claims to the Gem category. Essentially flawless, jewel-sharp lightly frosted reliefs appear to float on the deepest mirror fields that might be imagined. One of 20 Proofs struck and among the finest of the handful that can be traced today. Dannreuther and Garrett record only four auction appearances of Proofs, and the present coin is undoubtedly equal to or finer than these. Here...  more 1970 1879'S' AU $325.00 Extremely Fine. Lightly cleaned; 1894 About Uncirculated. Glossy from a past cleaning; 1901'S' About Uncirculated. A bit of lustre remains despite a past light cleaning. 3 pieces. 1971 1880 CH AU $350.00 Extremely Fine. A hint of lustre lies in the protected areas; 1881 Choice Extremely Fine. Light orange-gold surfaces; 1899 Choice About Uncirculated. Glowing mint lustre joins a few unfortunate scratches on Miss Liberty's head. 3 pieces. 1972 1880 CH AU $240.00 Extremely Fine. Lightly worn devices have a coppery texture. Examination reveals some light facial lines; 1902 Choice About Uncirculated. Magnification reveals light friction.
