The fields have somewhat subdued brilliance but there is muted flash visible in the finer design details on each side. First year of issue of the new denomination, one of only 865 Proofs struck.

The rims are lightly toned in a medium steel and russet shade. The central devices are frosty and pleasing. Liberty's left breast and hand and the eagle's left leg are both flatly struck.

The strike is sharp nearly everywhere. Some light hairlines are noted and there is a touch of toning around the rims.

There are a few toning spots in the left obverse field keeping this from Gem status.

There are the faintest hints of pale steel toning. The coin was very sharply struck and the design details stand out nicely against the shimmering watery fields. Only 1,987 were struck.
